Marlboro College Launches New Management Degree
-Public Invited to Open House on February 7-
BRATTLEBORO, VT -- “In today’s marketplace, business and technology are inseparable. Being grounded in one or the other is being only half-prepared,” says Claudine Keenan, Director of Academic Programs at the Marlboro College Graduate Center. The Center has just announced a new program, a Master of Science in Management (MSM), which will be described in a presentation at the Marlboro College Technology Center on Saturday, February 7.
“We had actually planned to launch the program next fall,” says Director of Admissions Margaret Donahue, “but word got out, and some students have already started coursework in January.” The program blends solid management principles with the best techniques for applied technology.
“We want our graduates to be tomorrow’s leaders by having a solid knowledge of both worlds,” Donahue adds.
According to Keenan, over the course of the last year, Marlboro administrators determined that, now more than ever, business and nonprofit leaders need to master the skills necessary to manage change. “Indeed, what sets apart the successful IT businesses from the ‘dot-bombs’ is a proven ability to adapt quickly and constantly to change,” says Keenan.
“What this program is not is just another MBA,” says Keenan, who points out that what distinguishes Marlboro’s MSM degree from any other is its emphasis on “change management.” This emphasis on managing change is the result of surveys and research on the most crucial factor for success in business and IT.
Students who enroll in the 11-month Master of Science in Management degree may specialize in three different areas: E-Marketing, Web Application Development, and IT Project Management. This focus on technology application is in keeping with other Masters programs now being offered by the Graduate Center: Internet Engineering and Teaching
with Internet Technologies. All are offered in a low-residency format that blends the best of weekend and online classes. The Center also offers an online bachelors degree completion program.
All Marlboro Graduate Center students complete a Capstone Project that requires them to apply their skills to real-world situations. “Many of our students have used these projects as the basis for new careers,” notes Keenan, “some have even begun their own successful businesses that began with a Capstone plan.”
The Graduate Center invites the public to a presentation on its new management program on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Marlboro College Technology Center, 28 Vernon Road, Brattleboro, VT. In addition to an overview by faculty and alumni, participants will have the opportunity to meet with professors, top administrators, current students, and enjoy lunch together.
