So the Red Sox open another season on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles. I know, they signed Curt Schilling, adding to a pitching staff that already includes Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe. They added a good relief pitcher, Kevin Foulke. Don't go there. Don't do it.
This is the time of year, every year, where you start to get sucked in. DO NOT let it happen to you this year. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me eighty five times in a row, well...
Look, you've seen them make the playoffs before. You've seen them win the division before. If you were old enough in 1986, you saw them win the penant. So let's face it: you have seen them do everything except win the world series. Therein lies the problem. The only thing you haven't seen them do is the one thing that they never are going to do.
I used to be a red sox fan. Now I root for the Yankees. Yeah, I know, call me a traitor. I guess at some point I just decided that, if I am going to follow baseball, I am doing so to enjoy it, not to suffer through it. There is a curse and the curse is clear: "They (the red sox) will never win another world series." That is what Babe Ruth said. So what part of "never" are you not understanding? The word "never" has a clear and unambiguous meaning. It doesn't mean this year. It doesn't mean next year. It means never.
If you can't bring yourself to root for the Yankees, then follow someone in the National League this year. The Phillies are supposed to be pretty good. Maybe you could keep tabs on the San Francisco Giants. Just don't do this to yourself. You know what I mean by "this". Don't do it. Life is stressful enough, give yourself a break.
