Bike Lanes for Putney Rd. Now!

Putney Road needs bicycle lanes badly.

Also sidewalks (between the West River bridge and Old Ferry Rd.).

The bike lanes should be separated from cars by a concrete curb, as is done in many European cities and towns.

How to make this happen?

A good model is the San Francisco Bike Coalition which has had tremendous success persuading their city to install bike lanes.

Check out their web site:

www.sfbike.org

There are two groups that I know of that are supposedly working on creating bike lanes on Putney Rd.:

The first is the Vt. Bike and Pedestrian Coalition:

www.vtbikeped.org

The second is the Windham Regional Commission's Transportation Committee, which meets monthly in Brat.:

In my opinion, neither of these groups has been very effective in getting bike lanes on Putney Rd. yet.

One reason the SF Bike Coalition has been so successful is that there are monthly "critical mass" rides in SF, in which hundreds, sometimes thousands, of bicyclists reclaim their streets from cars.

While this web site does not list Bratt., I have seen signs around town saying there is a critical mass in Bratt. on the last Friday of every month starting at 5 p.m. at the Town Common.

See you there!
