Picking wild salad for Beltane:

Dandelion greens in the field,
winter cress by the culvert,
wild garlic high on the mountain -
sharp tastes, green scents -

sunlight warm on skin,
muscle & bone easy rhythm -
mind clears, like a brook
when sands settle, quartz & garnet sparkling in the bed

Quaker ladies , pale blue stars among juniper & pine,
violets open,
jack-in-the-pulpit swelling to bloom in the rocky wash

Mourning cloak's flight stitches sun & shade,
bumblebees harvest early pollens -
the first black flies light to taste my sweat

Solomon's seal up (graceful arc the stem) -
saxifrage foams by the rock
where I rest on the summit

Beech leaves new green unfurled,
maple trees scarlet blossoms,
rich viridian glow of pastures, unplowed fields -
slate-blue circling hills -

feel the whole exquisite net pulse & sing,

yourself another such jewel
