Someone recently told me that they didn't believe in God because there is no scientific proof that God created the universe, ect. I thought about this and it occured to me that this position is invalid. You see, no theory about ultimate origin has been proven scientifically (and I would argue that no theory can ever be proven because the concept of ultimate origin by its nature escapes human comprehension). Yet, we know that an ultimate beginning did happen SOMEHOW, because we are here.
I mean, if today is Friday, yesterday was Thursday and before that was Wednesday, well, if we keep tracing that back and back and back to the dinasuars and before, at some point there had to be a beginning of the universe, right? (You could say, "no", that the universe always existed, but this also escapes human comprehension and scientific proof). So we know that it did happen somehow. The "big bang" is not scientifically proven either, and most versions of it that I have heard are not even a theory of ultimate origin. Usually "big bang" supporters say that the explosion happened because a certain mixture of atoms or particles came together to cause an epic explosion. Well, that supposes the pre-existence of atoms, particles , etc. and a theory of ultimate origin cannot have anything preexisting it. Where did the atoms, etc. come from?
Now, if an atheist wants to say that they are an atheist for some other reason, such as that their spiritual reality leads them away from the conclusion of a God and towards the big bang or some undiscovered scientific explanation, that's different. I'm not addressing that here. But the oft-cited, "There's no proof of God" and "no proof of ultimate origin" argument is invalid. Every human being recognizes that ultimate beginning happened, and therefore must have happened by some process, and no process has been scientifically proven. So to reject any one theory of ultimate origin on "lack of proof" grounds is hypocrital. You are accepting (even if you don't realize it) some unproven theory of origin already by acknowledging that it happened somehow.
