One fine day down by the lake in Sherwood Forest, Ward Woodman, a member of the band of authoritarian hoodlums known as the Merry Men, was practicing his aim on the archery range so as to at least hold an average level of accuracy.
No one in the Kingdom could ever achieve the perfect bowmanship of the notorious leader of the organized band of ruffians- Robin Hood. For quite some time, the Merry Men had been in control of the forest and the little village of Sherwood under the direction of Robin, and his village lieutenant, Little John.
Then suddenly, with a carelessness that showed an imbecilic disregard for safety in weapon use, Ward Woodman picked up his bow from the range table with an arrow set in it, and had somehow accidentally let spring the arrow in the direction of the man over to his side, Parker Brooks. The arrow Woodman shot left a shallow hole on Brooks' head, but with just a little blood loss and a strong debilitating headache. Brooks survived the near death blow, and he soon forgave Woodman for the blunderous indiscretion. Parker's hair never grew back in that spot on his head. Few outside of the Merry Men of the time had known of the archery range accident, for the brotherhood of hoods always stood together with mutual respect, assistance and discretion, keeping revelations of any brotherhood secrets from being widely spoken of, including the embarrassing mistake by lake. Sherwood's town crier made no mention of such in the village news announcements. It would not be the only time Woodman would be guilty of great irresponsibility with a bow.
Soon to come, the rest of the story...
