A friend was so incensed at the increase in her rent due to property tax increases that she was going to call for a march on town hall. I promised her I would post some information that would show where the bulk of our money is going.
Tax Rate 6/00 Town 1.16
State School 1.10
Local School .73 2.99
Tax Rate 6/01 Town 1.16
State School 1.10
Local School .93 3.19
Tax Rate 6/02 Town 1.22
State School 1.10
Local School 1.03 3.35
Tax Rate 6/03 Town 1.22
State School 1.10
Local School 1.14 3.46
Now this is where it gets a little funny due to changes in the law: The numbers following "Res." and "Non-Res." are the tax rate totals for the town and the school.
Tax Rate 6/04 Town 1.24
School 1.9236 Res. 3.1636
1.7401 Non-Res. 2.9801
Property taxes for 2005 are much higher because of the reappraisals, which landed most heavily on residences.
Tax Rate 6/05 Town .9519
School 1.3341 Res. 2.2860
1.1985 Non-Res. 2.1504
DID .1378
DID is the Downtown Investment District.
Commercial properties, including non-residential, are taxed at a lower rate than residential, but I don't know why and I don't know how those tax rates are determined. (Something else to check out.)
Hope this helps people understand some of this garbage.
