Much to my dismay, the Democratic Party is dead. Republicans have had control of the House and the Senate since 1994, and the White House since 2000 (despite the fact that W. is the worst President in American history.) I do not see this changing, even though the Democrats are much more in synch with what average Americans need than the Republicans.
Why is this? One reason and one reason only: Because large sections of America vote on one issue and one issue only-abortion. True, there are lots of pro-choice people also, but most of them don't vote ONLY on that issue. Most pro-choice people take lots of issues into account when they vote. On the other hand, many (if not most) pro-lifers vote on the abortion issue ONLY. They would probably vote for Adolf Hitler if he said he was pro-life on abortion and his opponent was pro-choice.
Should it be this way? No. But Democrats need to start dealing with reality the way it is, not the way it should be. They will keep losing election after election if they don't. This is the reality, like it or not.
Well, given those facts, one does have to ask the question- at some point - whether the Democrats should become a Pro-Life party. You can talk all you want about why women must have the right to choose. But the reality is that, unless the Democrats change their position on this, they will remain out of power. What good does it do in politics to be "right" if you're out of power?
Democrats have not been able to implement any of their other priorities because they have sacrificed all power at the altar of being pro-choice. The environment is in serious trouble, we are fighting a stupid and oil inspired WAR, we are trillions in debt and billions in deficits, the poor and middle class are being hopelessly driven into the ground, labor is under attack, and on and on and on. Is it worth it? Especially when it appears that the fight to preserve the "right to choose" is destined to fail anyway? (look at the 2 recent Supreme Court nominees).
