    Utne Nominates The Tracking Way

NatureThe Tracking Way Nominated For Prestigious 2005
    UTNE INDEPENDENT PRESS AWARDS

Wendell, MA, November 7, 2005 – The Tracking Way magazine, published by In This Place, has been nominated for an Utne Independent Press Award in the category of Best New Title. “We’re very honored by the nomination and glad that the writing and artwork by the youth and other contributors, as well as the hard work of the editorial boards, is being recognized in this way,” says Heather Lenz, co-director of In This Place.

In This Place launched The Tracking Way magazine in spring 2005 as a place for young people to express their own exploration of culture and relationship to the Earth. Bound in eye-catching four-color covers, the magazine features original art and writing by young people both local and from across the country. The first issue of the magazine included writing and artwork by students at Amherst High School, Northampton High School, and Stoneleigh Burnham.

The editorial boards (one teen, one adult) strive to publish a balance of articles about nature, home place, histories, tracking and traditional skills, peacemaking, culture and identity, and the arts. Local editorial board members Ingrid Shockey and Susie Patlove, both of Shelburne Falls, Paul Wanta and Heather Lenz of Wendell, and Kate Reimanis of Vermont, along with youth editors from around the northeast, work with advisors Kay Olan and Jake Swamp of the Mohawk Nation, and Joseph Bruchac of the Abenaki Nation.

Since 1989 the Utne Independent Press Awards have showcased the best of the independent press in categories ranging from best new title to political, environmental, cultural, and personal life coverage. Utne’s magazine editors select nominee publications through their extensive reading process and careful examination, rather than a competition requiring entry forms and fees. In this way, Utne honors the efforts of small, sometimes unnoticed publications that provide innovative, thought-provoking perspectives often ignored or overlooked by mass media.

Winners of the 2005 Utne Independent Press Awards will be listed in the January/February 2006 issue of Utne magazine.
