This press release was sent out today:

"Officials of the Town of Brattleboro were informed that Donald Ringler, deemed by the state to be a high-risk sex offender, may be released by the Department of Corrections into the Brattleboro community as early as April 11.

Ringler, 73 years old falls into a very small minority of Vermont sex offenders who refuse treatment while in prison, making him likely to offend again. Town and area police agencies are aware of the release and are in communication with the State Department of Corrections. On April 10 representatives from area social service agencies, victim advocates , Brattleboro Police Department, Town offices, and the Department of Corrections met to identify what measures could be taken to educate the public and insure personal safety.

Sex offenders can leave after serving a minimum jail term if they have undergone treatment. They are supervised while on probation for the remainder of the sentence. Some offenders forego treatment and serve their maximum time. When Ringler serves his final days and is released, he will not be supervised. Carl Roof of the Department of Corrections said sexual offenders typically fall into patterns when going for victims. Ringler is the kind of offender that gets to know his victims.

Town officials strongly encourage citizens to be vigilant of their and their children’s safety. Be aware of your surroundings and who your children are spending time with. Persons with questions or concerns may call Captain Gene Wrinn with the Brattleboro Police Department at 257-7946. Persons for whom this release might cause emotional stress are encouraged to seek assistance from their medical provider or by calling Health Care & Rehabilitation Services (HCRS) at 800-622-4235.
