In "Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage: Classic Advice for Contemporary Dilemmas," author Abigail Grotke (Miss Abigail) takes a step back in time and shows how classic advice books from the 1820s to the 1970s can help solve modern relationship dilemmas.
At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, Miss Abigail will appear at Everyone's Books, 25 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, Vermont, for an event and book signing.
Since 1998, Miss Abigail has provided classic advice to readers of her hugely popular Web site, www.missabigail.com. Drawing from her collection of over 1, 000 classic advice books dating from 1822 to 1978, author Abigail Grotke uses relevant words of wisdom from them to solve problems that occur today.
"Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage" is based on the Web site and covers the age-old topics of dating, love, beauty, and sex. While the language is often quaint and curious, the insights provided remain remarkably fresh. "Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating, and Marriage" is an affectionate look at advice throughout the ages. The Washington Post described Miss Abigail's advice as "charmingly retro."
Abigail Grotke has been collecting classic advice books for almost twenty years. She has used her library to create her award winning-Web site, "Miss Abigail's Time Warp Advice," and to write a high-profile weekly column for the London Times magazine. During the day, she is a digital projects coordinator at the Library of Congress. In 2004, she was named one of Library Journal's fifty-five "movers and shakers."
This event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend.
