If as claimed VY supplies 30% of Vermont’s power, then it is a simple exercise in math to address and promote a series of events that would reduce power demand by 30% Thus rendering this argument for the value of the plant moot.
How do we reduce our electric usage 30% by 2010? Here are some examples;
1. Change all light bulbs to energy efficient kinds, including Compact Florescent, LED and low voltage lighting. Use LED lights for reading at night and in desk lamps. These use less than 5 watts.
2. Replace old computer equipment with energy star rated SMALL footprint energy efficient systems - laptops are the best.
3. Replace all CRT monitors and TV sets with CRT screens for ones that use LCD screens. Some of these will perform dual functions - TV and computer screen and they are available in wide format.
4. Invest in Solar heating for hot water, and for space heating. Both passive and active systems work great in Vermont.
5. Replace external compressors for refrigeration in retails space (like the Putney Coop is doing). Use single efficient compressors for a multitude of devices.
6. Replace that old refrigerator or freezer with a super energy efficient unit for your home.
7. Replace your washer and opt for a gas dryer or use the cloths line in the sun, which really makes your cloths smell nice.
8. Invest in Geothermal heating and cooling systems, yes even in Vermont these things are more efficient and worth the investment.
9. Invest in solar photovoltaic systems.
These can be connected to the energy grid to off set your usage or even to sell electricity back to the power company.
10. Turn off your lights and other things when they are not in use, get motion sensors for lights that need to be on for "safety".
11. Close the windows if you use an air conditioner and please purchase a new unit if yours is older than 5 years. Find one that is the most energy efficient.
12. Encourage all of your friends to do similar things at home or at work. Changing even one bulb can make all the difference.
Lets change the world!
