PoliticsThanks to http://www.welchwatching.blogspot.com/ for furthering our outrage at this incident.

    Dear Sir,

We voted for you in November after hearing you speak at our place of employment and were impressed by your strong position against the Bush regime. We spoke to you afterwards and implored you to, if elected, explore any means necessary to stop this war and stand up to the ruling party.

Imagine our dismay as we view the video of you at the State of the Union last week.

The same man who was the target of your fiery speechmaking was the target of your fawning behavior after the speech was over. What in the world possessed you to want to shake that man’s hand, get his autograph and smile and act like everything is OK with his outrageously corrupt and single-minded presidency?

He is more of an enemy to us Vermonters than any of the people whose countries we invade and cultures we defile could ever be. He has drained our treasury, soiled our reputation worldwide, neglected to protect our citizens from natural disasters, lied about the reasons for going to war, and seriously damaged our constitutional rights. And you sought him out for an autograph? It boggles our mind that you would do this.

Our respect for you is shot and our votes will never be cast in your favor again, even if it means that Martha Rainville, or another Republican candidate is our next Congressperson. At least they would be honest about their Bush-loving and would not have misrepresented themselves to the voters of Vermont who sought CHANGE. We voted for someone who would stand up to the president, not seek him out for an autograph.

We read that the autograph was for your nephew – and even if that’s true – how can you seek out an autograph from the worst president in any of our lifetimes and the single greatest threat to our nation’s future? What kind of example are you trying to set for your nephew and for Vermont’s youth? Bush should be shunned and avoided and your association with him is an embarrassment, worse than anything Fox News could dish out for Vermont.

You have already been a great disappointment to us and many other Vermonters. There is a chance to redeem yourself by voting for the House Bill that will return our troops home and end this fiasco in Iraq. Will you make that stand or will you continue to betray your campaign platform and further disgrace your seat and your standing in Vermont’s eyes?

    Disgustedly,

I think you're making a big deal out of a lousy handshake. Washington,
like Hollywood, is populated with a bunch of asskissing, backslapping
phonies. But to want to hang Welch for this reveals alot about you - full
of hate and venom. Maybe Welch is gonna sell his copy on EBay or
something and make $1,000. The tone of your tirade is a litttle too much
to take. Lower the venom level and be a little more dispassionate - like
Noam Chomsky. But I do agree with you that this man must be watched
    - like all politicians must be.

I think that it's important to hold our public officials accountable for every move--especially if we voted them in! This time it's an autograph and a handshake. What's it gonna be next time?

I'm tired of people who think their political choices walk on water just because they won an election. Yes, go back to sleep after election day, little voter. Our duty is to remind them that they work for us. I wouldn't ask Bush for his autograph and feed his arrogrance. Nor do I want our sole Rep. to do it either. Politicians need us spittin' more venom, if you ask me. Then perhaps they'll end this war and not get into another one. I don't think the flies and honey thing applies to politicos.

And selling his autograph on e-bay? Puleaze. That's very entreprenurial, but personal gain was not why he was elected, remember?

Goodness! Politicians in bed with local employers?
    Hmm, I wonder why...

Gosh, I have an idea! Are most of your upper management people from Vermont? Or are they from surrounding states?

While I'm annoyed by politicking (and even Bernie has to do it from time to time) I am truly disgusted when someone uses the "royal we" as if they speak for everyone. I don't recall giving anyone my proxy.

"Open letters" are nothing more than egotistical posturing. They are meant to impress others, not to communicate with their "targets". And guess what, I doubt Peter Welch spends much time on iBrattleboro.

Not sure what the ratio is in Vermont, but typically Representatives and Senators consider one received letter to represent the sentiments of dozens or (in some states anyway) hundreds of citizens and voters (who didn't write to them). It is a barometer of public opinion.

A letter signed by dozens or hundreds of us would have significant weight.

    Thanks for 'getting it' Floyd

Leahy signed onto a radio bill a few years back largely due to comments received from Brattleboro during the rfb era.

Just because the status quo of two-faced politricksters exists does not mean we should condone it with our silence.

In the same way that cozying up to Bush reinforces his delusions of acceptance our silent acceptance of politics as usual does nothing to effect change.
