putneyschoolAcademic World Quest is a flagship program of the World Affairs Councils of America. Each year in early spring dozens of student teams from high schools all over the United States arrive in Washington, D.C. to compete in a giant quiz on world affairs. The quiz is only one part of a weekend designed to introduce the students to our nation’s capitol as well to representatives of the State Department and to people in the Media. Students report that they not only have a wonderful trip but that they feel part of a group of peers who are interested in world affairs and share the sensibilities of global citizens.

The Windham World Affairs Council sponsors a parallel quiz for high school teams in this area. We then send the winner of our local competition to Washington to participate in the national event.

This year our ACADEMIC WORLD QUEST competition will be held on February 14 at 6:30 in the dining room of the School for International Training. Brattleboro Union High School, Fall Mountain Regional High School, Monadnock Regional High School, The Putney School, and Vermont Academy will each send a team of four students. The teams were formed in the fall at each school and have been studying in specific categories ever since. The competition in the past has been very tight and we expect it to be the same this year.

For the first time we are inviting adults in the community to take the World Quest challenge along with the students. Those attending the competition on February 14 will be provided with answer sheets on which to record their answers. While we don’t send adults to Washington, those who can match the winning student team will receive some sweet surprises, befitting the evening.

It would not be possible for the Windham World Affairs Council to sponsor Academic World Quest without the generous support of Vermont Yankee/Entergy. We are grateful that they share with us the hope of encouraging young people to enter the conversation around world affairs.
