Free Speech for Firefighters

Here I go comparing Alabama to Vermont again..... I hope someone finds these contrasts useful! This story made me think of Guilford Firefighters needing a new building and having to raise the money themselves, and it also made me wonder if Chief David Emory would punish or reward creativity such as this.

Here in Huntsville, a new policy was handed down from on high: Firefighters may no longer wear their "Huntsville Fire Department" t-shirts on duty, not even for training excercises, but must wear a shirt with a collar. Furthermore, they must now buy their own coveralls rather than have them issued by the city.

That prompted some local firefighters to make a couple of parody "music videos" to raise money. And now they are in big trouble. THe bottom line: Do off duty firefighters have the right of free speech or not?

Here they are on YouTube doing "Man of Constant Turmoil." as in "I am a man of constant turmoil...i can't remember what to wear."
