Business Planning For Artists Course Offered
Marlboro College, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center, Creative Communities of Windham County, the Arts Council of Windham County and Southeastern Vermont Community Action, Inc. are collaborating to offer Business Planning for Artists, a course designed exclusively for self-employed artists and artisans. Classes will be held at the Marlboro College Graduate Center, Vernon Street in Brattleboro, on Wednesdays from 9am to 12 noon beginning March 21st and ending on June 6th.
The 12-session course will explore all aspects of small business management, focusing on issues of particular interest to individuals with arts-related ventures who make all or part of their living from selling their art. Topics will include copyright protection and understanding contracts, market research, working with galleries, participating in trade shows, selling to retail customers, using technology in your business, pricing, record keeping, and managing your finances.
Betsy Gentile, coordinator of the Creative Communities Council states, “This course is essential to those artists who want to further their businesses. It also serves to strengthen our on-going development of the creative economy in the Brattleboro region.”
Lead instructor for the course will be Denise Mason, who will be assisted by a variety of guest speakers. Denise has taught business planning courses for the past seven years and has provided consulting services to artists and artisans for more than nine years. Tuition for the course is $395 and there is a materials fee of $60. Class size is limited to twelve participants.
