Commuters! Join our 7-week Spring Commuter Challenge from May 1-June 15 when we challenge you to leave your car at home as often as possible! It’s healthy, fun, and good for the earth. Here are some suggested ways to take the challenge:
a. Figure out your average daily/weekly mileage, then set your own goal of reducing use by 10, 15, 20, 25% - whatever you want!
b. walk, bike, or use public transportation whenever possible
c. organize carpools for common activities like shopping, church, recreation, picking up kids from school activities, et al.
d. organize daily carpools for work through Vermont RideShare at http://www.vermontrideshare.org/uvr.htm
e. forego trips out of state for your shopping needs; make do with what you can buy locally
f. keep a to-do list of errands that require use of the car (shopping, dry cleaning, laundry, etc.) and combine them in one weekly trip.
g. park one time downtown and walk to all the stores you have to visit
h. entertain at home more with family and neighbors
Consume less fuel and more food! With more physical activity, you can eat more when you drive less!
Consume less fuel and pollute less! Fewer miles driven means fewer pounds of carbon released into the atmosphere!
To enter the challenge, download a registration form from the website www.bike2work-day.com. Commute logs are available online, but completed records must be faxed or mailed by June 19. When you register, you will receive a coupon for a 10-20% discount in our region at Brattleboro Bike Shop, Specialized Sports, or West Hill Shop, and others in the Connecticut River Valley. Drawings for a Van Dessel commuter bike, Red Sox tickets, fall foliage train tour, and Ben and Jerry's ice cream will be held on Friday, June 22. See details online.
