This is a copy of my letter to Peter Welch. Our country is in distress. The only cure is to get these guys out of there before they do more damage. More people have to write him; set a fire under him; get him moving.
"Dear Congressman Welch:
Last Sunday I traveled to Kennebunkport with a number of other Vermonters. We mixed with a large number of Americans who shared our positions of opposition to the war(s) and impeachment of the fomenters.
There was music. There were speeches. There was fellowship. We all agreed that the war would never end as long as this Administration and its Kleptocratic Neocon backers were removed from office. We also agreed that Impeachment was the only Constitutional way to accomplish this.
You have expressed opposition to this war on numerous occasions. However, you have failed to act in any meaningful manner to conclude it. It is time to get off the fence and join with Rep Dennis Kucinich and other Members of Congress in supporting H Res 333, a bill to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney.(One step at a time).
At the rally, we heard a number of speakers (and singers too) recite a litany of crimes already admitted or on the public record that justify impeachment. I won't bore you with a repetition...you know what they are. Some are so public that any investigation can be completed in a matter of hours allowing the process to move forward without delay. It MUST move forward. The future of our country depends upon it.
I am an Independent voter and I usually support Democrats. There are many of us in Vermont, as well as Progressives, Liberty Unionists, Libertarians, Greens, Etc. One thing we share, along with other Americans from Red, Blue and Purple states is that we presently hold Congress at about the same level of approval as we hold the President. In 2006, we combined to vote the Republicans out of control of Congress, anticipating change. That change has been slow in coming. Impeachment must be placed back on the table. The war must end.
If change doesn't occur, some strange things may happen. To Vermonters, you are Congress. 2008 is coming. Act before it's too late.
I will close with a few thoughts from the Declaration of Independence:
July 4, 1776...Complaints against King George:
"...He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
...He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices...
...He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws...
...He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
...For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments."
Do you get my drift?
Tom Finnell Brattleboro
Postscript: In the wake of the Libby abomination, perhaps we should skip impeachment and go directly to TREASON!"
