Last weekend, I was in town. Returning from a walk to the Retreat Tower, I walked thorugh an unfamiliar neighborhood. In the middle of a large public space, there was this body of water encased in cement, surrounded by a chicken wire fence. My friend, who was walking with me and who lives in town, told me it was an old reservoir.
It seemed like an odd thing to run into.
What is this thing? It looks like a large in-ground swimming pool. I'm wondering what, if anything, the town uses it for or plans to do with it.
If it's useless, potentially dangerous and an eyesore in an otherwise lovely neighborhood, why don't they just fill it in and get rid of it? Would that be physically impossible, inadvisable or prohibitively expensive?
Or is there more to the story?
Is there some interesting and/or much-loved history? Is it an important town landmark? Is there some environmental purpose in keeping the reservoir?
On a forum I use, someone asked if this is the "frog pond". Is it?
Please tell me. It seemed like such a bizarre and mysterious thing to run into.
