Belly Dance Hafla, Fundraiser and Drum Jam
The Common Ground Restaurant on Elliot Street in Brattleboro is hosting a Belly dance Hafla on Saturday, August 18th. The event is free and open to the public. All proceeds from dinner and dance tips will benefit a local woman’s naturopathic breast cancer support.
Troupe Sahibat, who is comprised of women dancers originating from Western Massachusetts and Southern Vermont, will be co-hosting this event with Cyndal and the Common Ground.
“We wanted to do something to support our close friend who is currently living with breast cancer. She is a single mom in Brattleboro and though insurance covers the allopathic medicine, we wanted to support her in getting some naturopathic treatment as well”, says Robin Rieske, member of Troupe Sahibat and co-organizer of the event. “The Common Ground Restaurant has been amazingly generous with their willingness to help us out.”
Inspired by the ancient belly dance traditions of the Middle East and infused with modern creative expression, the lyrical movements and rhythmic vibrancy of belly dancing are both contagious and captivating. Featured at this event will be Cabaret, Tribal and fusion belly dance styles. Dancers at this event will include Erin, Raks the Casbah , Attar, Ismalia, Raks Mahsati, Troupe Sahibat , Pacita and others.
The event will be held from 6:00- 8:30 p.m. At 8:30, people are invited to bring drums and hip scarves for a dance and drum jam. A full buffet of Middle Eastern cuisine will be available by donation. All proceeds to benefit breast cancer support.
