The Dec. 1 Reformer carried an important editorial, written by a BUHS grad, on proposed amendments to the Farm Bill still alive in the U.S. Senate. The Grassley-Dorgan amendment would cap subsidies to huge farms; the Lugar Lautenberg amendment would provide a safety net for all farmers.
According to the writer, Isaac Evans-Frantz, both amendments deserve support which can be voiced to Senators Leahy and Sanders. Eric has connections to mexican farmers and he outlines their plight as well as the fact that 2,500 or more immigrants work in VT's agricultural economy. VT's immigration issues are important to keep an eye on, as they differ from those of states with high populations close to the Mexican border.
The editorial makes no mention of the provisions to boost organic farming suggested in earlier versions of the Farm Bill.
The full editorial seems not to be avialable online, so I have summarized it here.
