    Some of The Indictment Comments
    Thursday, January 31 2008 @ 12:16 AM GMT+4
    Contributed by: cgrotke

OpinionA sampling of the email comments we have received at iBrattleboro (though they are clearly for all of us in town):

"I live in Delaware and read about your town's move to arrest Bush and Cheney. I have sat here and wondered for 5 years wondering why we haven't made moves to impeach them. Even with a Democratic majority it hasn't happened. So I salute and wholly support your efforts. Where do I sign up?!! Newark, De"

    ...

"You guys make me proud. My wife and I travel a lot internationally and actions like yours re Bush & Cheney are ones we like to talk about." - Edwards, CO

    ...

"I am overwhelmed with admiration for your town because you dared to say aloud what so many of us, all patriots, all Americans, feel to be true. I have never visited Vermont, but I shall make it a point to do so, and to come to your town, this summer. Keep up the good work!" - Saint Paul, Minnesota

    ...
"I for one plan to spend my vacation in Brattleboro this year (aren't they the ones who have all the public nudity? Or is that Montpelier?)"

    ...

"The people of Brattleboro should be celebrated as true patriots. The negative, threatening emails from Americans should only show proof at how morally corrupt segments of our society have become. Sad, really...."

    ...

"Bravo, you are indeed brave citizens, who have the guts to demand the arrest of Bush & Cheney. An excellent way for the rest of us who are sickened by the actions of this administration to really voice our displeasure with the king  (Cheney) and his jester (Bush)." - Studio City

    ...

"Thank you so much for having the nerve to raise a stink, cause a stir, make people mad, look screwy, take abuse, and generally stand up for your principles.

Evil is rampant in Washington, DC.  Bush and Company are just the top of the heap and all of them are worthy of little less then impeachment, trial and . . . well I don't know what punishments they would deserve by law on the charges you endorse  but whatever they are, they are not harsh enough.

I write to voice my appreciation of your courage.   Thank you for speaking out and saying what millions would really like to say.

The naysayers are all Right wing loons and don't really count.  It is the rest of the nation that believes your right in your efforst.

You do have many supporters out here in the REAL WORLD.

    Rancho Mirage, California"

    ...

    "Greetings from South Bend, IN.
Just read story on your referendum to indict the Booby Twins, Bush and Cheney.
MORE POWER TO YOU!!!   After stealing 2 elections, and twice taking an oath to
"uphold and defend the Conststution of the U.S." I believe you are right on in your
display of disappointment in our present leadership. I find it somewhat hypocritical
of those who disagree, to threaten you with terroist acts and then say that you're not grateful to be protected from terroism by our idiot president and his henchman.
The first act of terrorism on American soil was The Boston Tea Party.
George Washington was called a terrorist by the English. Lincoln would have been hung by the Confederacy for Treason. It's all a matter of linguistics.
                                                        Liberals Think! Conservatives follow.
                                                                                May God Bless You!"

    ...

"I just read today your town's petition to arrest Bush and Cheney for crimes against the Constitution.  Thank you.  He has taken things too far, created a war based on fear alone.  I may have to look into moving into your town."

    ...

"When true blue Americans smell a rat in Washington, one who disregards the Constitution, the rights of the citizens and plunges the nation into debt, they need to stand up and make a statement.  Your wonderful little town (I've never been there, don't know if it is small or large, but I do know it is filled with wonderful people with brains)........made a statement and one that is logical.  Don't let those small minded people who think a president who refuses to read the world's newspapers, or pay attention to the condition of this country and its financial health, but focuses on a war that we don't need or want and can't afford is a president we need to blindly support.  He has to go!  One more year may spell the end of the United States.  How many young people have to come back (if they are lucky enough to make it back) with arms and legs missing?  This war is for his ego or to show his daddy that he has risen above his drug and alcohol days and is doing more than his father was able to do.  How did this fool get to be President?????

If we fall, it will more than likely be due to the air heads in Washington who are only interested in feathering their own nests, and protecting their health benefits and their retirement funds.  The rest of us are going to Hell in a hand basket thanks to a president who lied and cheated his way into office...not once but twice!!  How the heck did that happen?

I am proud of your town and I salute you for being good American citizens and taking a stand that we all should be taking.  God Bless Brattleboro!  I have never responded to any story I have ever read on the Internet, but I feel, after reading some of the Bubba comments from fools, that you need to know that not everyone supports those idiots.  Is there someone from your town who feels qualified to run for President?  I'd vote for them!

    Sincerely,
    Chico CA

    ...

    "Dear Fellow Americans of Battledore,

I admire your intelligence, your courage and you willingness to take action against an administration that has lied to it's citizen and has acted illegally and unconstitutionally on several occasions.  I wish more Americans would realize that it is not only our right under the constitution to question and challenge our leaders when they act improperly but it is our obligation.  You are all better Americans than the angry fools who wish you harm.  They are ignorant and no better than the terrorists they claim to despise.  I support your actions and wish you well.

    God bless,

    Los Angeles, CA"

    ...

"Well you bunch of cow milkin hippies need to wake up cause if you think it's bad now wait till you get one of those gay lovin, baby killin, lettin the illegal mexicans come over for free democrats in office then you gonna see bad you limp noodled  cock eyed weirdos"

    ....

"You people are either incapable of individual research: e.g.; no internet, no libraries, newspapers without integrity (probably true), no FOX NEWS.  Or you people have beem so immersed in hatred of President Bush, so irrational that facts, THE TRUTH is beyond comprehension or more than likely is ignored due to an agenda driven thought process."

    ...

    "Greetings,
I had just about given up hope, for the sanity of this nation. At 73,
I can now rest in the peace of mind, that this nation will long
endure, as long as there remains a voice for true liberty, in the
midst of creeping tyranny. Thank you Brattleboro! Keep up the good
fight and pass the torch to future generations, of Sons and Daughters
of Liberty. I came to Oregon to die and now I wish I had gone to
Vermont. All I have is my Social Security check, but if money alone
will be a cause of failure, I'll gladly put you in my monthly budget.
It won't be much and I would gladly give my life instead, against the
'golem' of tyranny that's coming at us through time. I'm enclosing a
quote from A. Lincoln, which I find full of wisdom.

"All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined could not by
force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in
a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of
danger to be expected? I answer, if  it ever reaches us, it must
spring up amongst us. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be
its author and finisher." – Abraham Lincoln - ( 16th President of the
    United States of America - 1809-1865 ).

    Thank You All,"

I think that it is interesting and telling (of something but what?) that
small, actually fairly conservative Brattleboro elicits so much "wrath"
and attention from the nation at large when we are not really doing
anything that radical or far out or "system changing." A couple of
anarchist kids want to express their freedom by walking around
without their clothes on in a parking lot, or a petition to impeach or
indict Bush/Cheney? What's the big deal? How is the world being
overthrown by this rather normal expression of people who are not
satisfied with the current state of society? I mean, no one is carrying
a gun or breaking windows or robbing a bank or burning down a
WalMart or seceding from the union here. Just some people being
themselves, expressing themselves to stage legitimate (it would seem
to me) and Constitutionally protected (it would seem to me) protest
    acts, largely symbolic.
Why is that a "threat" and who is it a "threat" to? Apparently, anyone
daring to step out of line even symbolically, just as anyone trying to
operate outside of the two parties, must be squelched and hard, by
some psychic-social need of the "center-right." But what is that need?
Is it the shadow that does not want to be revealed? What is lurking in
    that shadow?

I kind of wondered how this gets so much attention. Part of it is that we live in a small town and when our wire service loving corporate newspapers puts a story on page one about something interesting or peculiar the wire services pick it up. A similar effort in Albany or Springfield, MA would likely be buried on page 7 and never be heard about. So those who support this effort are lucky in some respect that the Reformer is connected in the way it is and word of our deeds, but sometimes also plenty of erroneous info that distorts perceptions of our community, gets out to the larger world.

Anyway, It's nice to read the positive comments that have come in, And most of them with correct spelling and grammar too!

The right wing haters are what has been talked about and that is what they want: to distract us away from the merits of holding the criminal regime responsible. It is amusing to read these misspelled insults and lobotomized turns of phrase.

Thanks so much for getting these up, Chris. It really helps. I had added a few similar short ones to the first para of my Reformer LTTE today, but they were edited out.
These here are about the best, most inspiring comments that I've seen (and i've been tracking many over these days). I wonder if there's a way we can get them out to a wider local audience. It would really help for people townwide to recognize the depth and sincerity of so many people's feelings about what were are doing here, and to see that people nationwide are so appreciative and so inspired about our initiatives in these critical times.

Our local readership is great, so I'm certain people are reading these. Feel free to refer people to the story (you can email any story on the
site to anyone you like - look for the little envelope symbol) if you
    think anyone is missing out.

    Here are some more:

"To the Citizens of Brattleboro Who Recognize That This
Administration Is Guilty of High Crimes and Misdemeanors As Well As
    Treason:

Bravo for your honesty and courage as well as apparently being the
only people (other than a couple of good men in our Congress) to
recognize the crimes of Bush and Cheney and to call for a just
punishment. They are indeed guilty of crimes against our precious
Constitution and, as such, should be brought to justice. The remedy
which is provided for in our Constitution is not being upheld by our
leaders so it is only right that citizens such as yourselves take the
action which you have taken. Again, we applaud you and truly pray
that this will become a national movement."

    ....

"I fully applaud the efforts of your towns leaders to arrest Bush and
Cheney. I only wish the people in congress had the backbone to do
    the same.

Tell the people of Brattleboro I am proud of them.

    Oklahoma"

    ....

"Thank you BRATTLEBORO, Vt. for your Bravery in the face of
adversity. Dumbya and Dick need to held accountable for their
needless senseless arrogant waste of our soldiers lives.
    Keep up the courage Vt."

    ...

"If you have received more negative comments than positive it is only
because the masses have not seen your petition.

    God Bless Brattleboro!!!

We have all been wondering where we should move to, perhaps
    Brattleboro is the spot!!!"
    ...

" I am thrilled that some brave souls have taken the initiative that the
Congress should have done years ago. I wish my life circumstances
permitted me to move to Vermont.

You will receive a lot of hate mail. Even so, please know that there
are millions who support what the citizens of Brattleboro are doing. I
hope the town votes affirmative on the petition. And, I hope others
are encouraged to follow the example.

    God bless you all.

Thank you. Please just note me as a supporter from Tennessee."
    Another take on the flap
    Authored by: spinoza on Thursday, January 31 2008 @ 06:21 PM GMT+4
For me the issue is driven by my role as a parent. What kind of message do I send, what kind of World do I wish to leave to my children?

Symbolic measures can be powerful. When I heard that John Nirenberg was snubbed by Speaker Pelosi, that was a symbolic gesture that speaks to the disenfranchisement of all, not just a single man walking a long way to make human contact with an elected leader.

Umberto Eco wrote that dictatorships are maintained more by consensus than coercion.

There are so many levels and layers here, but I keep returning to the famous question from Chaos Theory; Can the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brattleboro set off a tornado in Texas?

And I ask myself, is a vote simply an affirmation of legal precedents and validations of the status quo? Or is a vote one's real voice? The voice I hear whether speaking or silent, whether in the company of others, or alone within the echo of hopes and dreams.

Well, I am glad to see that none of these folks have ever shopped here,
for they would be disgusted at our "counter demeanor" or whatever It's
    called. (sic)

Thank you Brattleboro, for I am a proud Vermonter.

There are hundreds of responses to various stories on the Reformer's site as well. Check out the ones to yesterdays editorial.
