BCTV News from Cor Trowbridge

It’s election season, and as local races are gearing up, we’re busy coordinating candidate forums and making BCTV facilities available for candidates to get their message to voters. This year, candidates for local office in Brattleboro, Vernon and Guilford received a letter inviting them to come in and tape a prepared statement about their candidacy. We’ll compile these short statements into a program to be played frequently on channels 8 and 10 during the weeks leading up to Election Day. If you want see the candidates in action from behind a camera, see below for forum dates – we could use your help. -C.T.

· Monday, February 11 (8:30 - 10 am) Brattleboro Selectboard Meeting. Need one camera operator for this mid-month meeting. All equipment will be set up and ready to go.

· Monday, February 11 (4:30 - 6:30 pm). Conversation with Candidates, sponsored by League of Women Voters (Brattleboro Selectboard Room). Two camera operators needed.

· Tuesday, February 12 (3:30 - 7:30 pm). Rock Bands from Harris Hill Telethon. Creative camera operators, rock on! We’ll be taping the bands who played for the Harris Hill Telethon and it will be loud and fun in the BCTV Studio. Three shifts: call for times.

· Friday, February 15 (1-2 pm) Open Studio: Women’s Film Festival. One camera operator needed for this studio shoot.

· Tuesday, February 19 (6 pm) - Brattleboro Selectboard meeting. Need camera operators for first (6:00 - 8:00) and second shift (8:00 pm to end of meeting).

· Thursday, February 21 (7-9 pm). Candidates’ Forum, sponsored by Brattleboro Savings & Loan. Two camera operators needed for this live shoot.

· Thursday, March 6 (6 – 7 pm). Artists a la Mode. Crew members welcome for this live series about local artists. Contact producer Kathryn Turnas at kturnas@hotmail.com.

Here are a few of the new local programs to check out on this week’s schedule!

· Talk of the Towns: Lauren-Glenn Davitian. iBrattleboro’s Chris Grotke interviews one of Vermont’s leading community media activists during her recent visit to BCTV.

· In-Sight Photography: A Day in the Life of Brattleboro. Producers: Eric Maxen and Peter Luby. This 9-minute series of still photos was a recent effort by local teens.

· The Windham Orchestra in Concert 11/17/07. Producer: David Runnion. Here’s a chance to “Listen Local”, produced by the multi-talented orchestra director!

· The Dedication of the Wilder Building and Superbill! Editor: Theresa Maggio. These are projects taped over a year ago and brought to life by our master volunteer editor.

· Lisa McCormick in Concert at NEYT on 11/17/07. Producer: Theresa Maggio. Catch the rising star of this local singer/songwriter.

Call for submissions: CineSlam, “Vermont’s GLBT Liberation Short Films Fest,” will be held on Saturday, June 14 in Guilford. It will be a full day of screening sessions with a number of filmmakers in attendance. Go to www.cineslam.com for submission requirements and prizes.

New Equipment: BCTV recently added a monopod to the field equipment available to producers. This is what it sounds like, a tripod but with only one leg. It is designed for situations where there isn’t much room, or when you don’t have a lot of time to set up. Check it out!

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS

Congratulations and welcome to new trainees who recently completed Basic One-Camera Production: Tom Finnell, Dave Hall, Mindy Haskins-Rogers, Peter Hayward, Mark Mayer, Peter Putnam and Francine Vallerio.

Please note for full classes, we will schedule another class in April/May if there is a waiting list.

Vlogging Workshop - FULL
Thursday, February 7, 5:30-7:45 PM
Cost: $10

Producers can learn the art of Vlogging (video blogging) and putting their programs up on popular video websites.

Pre-requisite: Basic One Camera Production
Practicum: uploading one program onto a video website
(6 students maximum)


Basic Studio Production – 3 SPACES STILL OPEN
Tuesday & Thursday, February 26 & 28, 5:30-7:45 PM
Cost: $20

Learn the technical and conceptual skills to produce or crew on a program in BCTV’s studio and control room. Hands-on instruction on cameras, tripods, set design, lighting, switcher, audio board and mics, video playback and recording, and graphic design.

Pre-requisite: Basic One-Camera Production
Practicum: 2 hours of Selectboard or other multi-camera event
(8 students maximum)


Editing with Final Cut - FULL
Thursdays March 6 & 13, 5:00-7 PM
Cost: $20

Learn basic but essential editing skills on a versatile video editing program, such as capturing footage, cutting, and adding transitions, special effects, titles and audio tracks.

Pre-requisite: BCTV camera training or equivalent experience
Practicum: 2 or more hours editing a video project
(6 students Maximum)


Graphics Workshop - FULL
Thursday, March 27, 5:30-7:30 PM
Cost: $10

Get oriented on the Compix graphics program to give your production on-screen titles and graphics. Knowing this allows you to do a live-to-tape shoot and eliminate post production editing time.

Pre-requisite: Basic Studio Production
(4 students maximum)


Notes to Members

· Board Meeting. The next BCTV Board meeting will be held on February 28 at 6:30 pm in the Hannah Cosman Room on the second floor of the Brattleboro Municipal Center. Members are welcome to attend and participate in the public comment period of the meeting, and may tape and edit the meetings for broadcast.

· New and Renewing Members. · Wish list: If you are upgrading to a spiffy new TV screen, please consider donating your old (working) TV monitor to BCTV. Our monitors are on so much, they tend to burn out faster than normal.
