Forget Bush/Cheney indictment. Forget "Dora-gate." Vermont is now one step away from allowing hemp to be legalized.

chong2 "Hey Cheech! Day say Vermont is gonna legalize it man!"

Today the Vermont House of Representatives voted on a bill that would allow Vermont farmers to apply to the state for licenses to grow hemp. Known as H.267, the Hemp Bill will allow "industrial hemp production will provide farmers an opportunity to sell their products to a marketplace that pays them a reasonable rate of return for their labor and capital investments. Farmers in Canada report an $800.00 per‑acre return for the crop." Today's vote was a landslide, 127 to 9. Now the bill goes to the Senate (Senate Ag. Committee I presume) and no word yet when it will be taken up.

Brattleboro reps Sarah Edwards, Ginny Milkey, and Darryl Pillsbury all voted in favor of H.267.

Peter Freyne has a good recap of today's landmark vote (if you could call it that) and Rural Vermont has the full text of the bill here.

So the House sez "no" to impeachment but "yes" to industrial hemp. What a weird legislature this is.
