Brattleboro Selectboard Candidate Video - Audrey Garfield - 3 Year Seat

Of the candidates running for the 3 year seat, Audrey is really the only choice. She was thrown into having to be Chair last year- which she didn't want, I'll remind all- after a single year on the board, and has survived. She has plans in the works- the "green" wastewater treatment plan, for one- which is a great opportunity for us as a town that will not happen without her. If the Old Boy guard gets back in power, we'll get the treatment facility they began plans for years ago amongst their friends which is not green, and not cheaper.

I have openly disagreed with Audrey several times, and she has ticked me off and I've told her so. But she still shares the vision of Brattleboro that we want. I don't want all the amazing amount of work and progress made in the last year to be undermined. I don't want to go backward to a rubber-stamping, bobble-headed SB of "friendly deals" for the sake of "everybody getting along". Democracy is not a kumbaya singalong. It's ideas and argument. That is a thriving, living atmosphere where things can grow. We should be worried when people aren't willing to risk some conflict. And I for one certainly don't want to go back to the stagnant, murky aquarium of politics as it used to be in this town. Better to turn up the lights, open windows, and get things out in the open. That's a process that's just begun. I want to see it continue. Vote for Audrey.

***But she still shares the vision of Brattleboro that we want.***
Talks talk, doesn't walk walk, in my view. Open and transparent government, and due process, are more important than the vision thing. Of course, my view counts for nothing.

Annikee makes some great points here.
I too have had my differences with positions Audrey has taken, but
we've got to look at the bigger picture here.
The Housing Advisory Commission, the Conservation commission,
Peak Oil task force, citizen participation on the agenda... ALL put in
place by the present board. This talking point that the opposition has
about being distracted by nudity and indictment is complete BS and
it's time people start pushing back on this empty rhetoric.
And I think what Audrey says here about 'putting the house back in
order' is completely right - past boards didn't have nearly the
dedication that I saw at these meetings over the past year.

As Annikee said, democracy is messy, but Audrey has the skills and
experience to make some of these great things continue and I know
she respects others' opinions on all the issues. Sure, she can be a
little rough and tough around the edges, but she's a solid progressive
voice and she gets things done.

And the alternative? Oh my god... watch the 3 year seat video posted
here... O'Connor has nothing but vague complaints and no platform of
any substance at all. And Archambault didn't even show up for the
    last forum.

    Audrey is doing good work.

Yes, Audrey Garfield is doing great work. Let's give her a three-year
    term.

And both Annikee and Timmy are correct: democracy is messy, and in
order to get things done, there must be compromise. Nobody gets
everything they want in a democratic system! That's for vanity
candidates. In the real world, deals must be made and a consensus
must be reached. I think Audrey is good at finding a common sense,
middle ground, despite the "progressive" tag she gets labeled with.

And PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE: Let's forget about the nudity issue,
even if the public votes to not allow it. It's a waste of time. We have
budget and development issues on the table in the next year that are
far more important. WHO CARES if we ban nudity? It's not important,
not something to get your knickers in a twist about. It's a waste of
    time.

Re: Nudity - it's already been dealt with - no nudity anywhere at any age
in public Brattleboro. It's the law!

Audrey voted for the ban, along with Dick, Steve, and Rich. It is not an
issue for the people of town to vote on this year.

Rescinding the silly thing would be the next action to take, not banning.
    It's already banned. : )

    No, I didn't "miss it." : )

What I'm saying is, Audrey is able to find compromise and MOVE ON.

That's the kind of leadership we need, not people dwelling on a tiny
issue. It's time to put a loin cloth on and move to the more important
item of business. That's the point I was making.

    Maus, haven't you heard?
Loincloths are all the rage this season.
They've replaced the penis warmer sock as the hottest item in hippie
    'earth conscious' men's wear.

So, don't put a sock on it...Keep it warm with a Far Out, Psychedelic
    Loincloth.
    Put a sock in it.

Why don't you start another loincloth thread? This is a bit off-topic,
Buddy... but we know how your mind wanders to the nether-regions!

    Timmy,

Why don't you put the anger aside and develop a sense of humor. It was
    meant to be humorous. Geez!

    Duuude, I'm not angry!
Sorry I should have put one of these: :)
It was meant to be a friendly ribbing, honestly.
Now look what you've done - now I'M way off topic.

    Timmy,

Whenever I'm in a presentation in front of a huge crowd of people I
don't know, I try to imagine that all of them are naked. It helps me
deal with my fear of large crowds, and I can go on. I don't know if
this is a sign that I'm "sex crazed" or "obsessed with nudity" or
whatever, all I know it works.

In the same vein, when "nudity buffs" get all up in arms about being
naked wherever they want, the loincloth and penis warmer sock
images helps me to laugh about all the absurdity. I hope this doesn't
make me a "pervert"---just someone who has a weird, untainted by
    puritanical insanity---view of life.
