SUMMARY OF CRASH: On 03/24/08 at approximately 1336 hours the Vermont State Police, Guilford Fire Department, Rescue Inc. and the Brattleboro Fire Department were dispatched to a report of a car that had driven under a tractor trailer on I91 in the area of milemarker 4 northbound.

Investigation revealed that Lawrenc Miller, 45, of Troy, NY, had been traveling north on I91, when he realized that he had missed the exit for the Massachusetts Turnpike. Miller decided to make a U-Turn in the area of milemarker 4. He slowed his vehicle in the right lane, and then signalled that he was going to make a turn.

As Miller made the turn into the U-Turn area, James Ault, 61, of Florence, MA, who was also northbound pulled out to pass Miller. As Miller turned into the U-Turn, Ault applied his brakes and skidded for approximately 200 feet before striking Miller's trailer just behind the trailer's landing gear. Both vehicles came to rest partially in the U-Turn and partially in the northbound passing lane, with Ault's car partially under Miller's trailer.

Miller was not injured as a result of the crash. Ault was able to extricate himself from his vehicle and was transported to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital by Rescue Inc. He was treated and released for minor injuries to include neck stiffness and a scratch on the left side of his face.

Miller was cited to appear in Windham District Court on 04/29/08 to face the charge of Negligent Operation. A commercial motor vehicle inspection completed by Sgt. Chris Buckley and Sgt. Mike Roj of the Vermont State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Team resulted in several violations. Macy's Light Delivery Inc., the owner of Miller's truck, received Vermont Traffic Complaints for equipment violations to include a cracked frame on the tractor, defective tires, trailer brakes that were out of adjustment and a cracked brake pad.

The Guilford Fire Department stood by until Ault's car was extricated from under the trailer. Miller' tractor trailer was placed out of service due to the equipment violations listed and was removed from the scene by Rick's Towing. Ault's car was removed from the scene by Marlboro Collision.

What I found astounding was that the driver of the TT didn't realize that he missed the Mass Pike exit sooner. The accident occurred nearly 47 miles north of the I-90 exit in W. Springfield, MA. If I recall correctly (I haven't been down that way for some time), there are several large green overhead signs warning of the upcoming Mass Pike exit. I wouldn't think that such a major exit would be too hard to miss in the middle of the day.

    Peace,
    Max

I bet you it’s but 30 to 35 minutes away. Don’t forget he went through a forest of signs in the city...it can be hard to pay attention. It’s a big chance pulling u-e on a highway...if the state police don’t caught you, you can as easily lose a trailer wheel in the mud. His truck was in terrible mechanical condition.

There is a very high rate of fatalities when a car goes under your trailer...it’s a very dangerous accident.

The driver is probably young...he can’t be making good money in the good times, never mind the trucking depression we are in now. I bet you the driver lives a rather disconnected and vagabond lifestyle....he is more a slave to the trucking instability than being free being.

I bet you the company abuses the heck out of him...maybe makes $200 a week if he lucky and spends a lot of time away from home.

While this quick sidebar story I'm about to relate has nowhere near the serious aspect of the accident related above, it will show that people sometimes just "miss their turn" on the highway.

A few years ago I was in the parking lot of the McDonald's that is just off exit 4 of I-89 in Randolph (VT) when I was approached by an older woman who asked me if she was near the Putney Inn which she was told was just off exit four. When I told her the Putney Inn was indeed just off exit 4...of I-91 and she was on I-89. She said, "oh dear...I guess I missed my turn."

I have been utterly lost in about every state in the United States....for weeks at a time I have been lost.

I remember my company telling me to make a delivery in Menominee Wisconsin, where I ended looking for the street in Menomonee Wisconsin....that’s one letter difference. It took us a while to figure out my screw-up?

Wisconsin is a huge state. That’s 150 miles each way for 6 hours of driving time.

Remember this location is _just_ into Vermont. So thirty minutes is probably accurate.

It's amazing to me that a trucker would try to pull a U in the middle of an interstate. Why not go to the next exit and turn around? Sheer stupidity. Luckily nobody was killed.

It’s terribly unsafe...recklessly unsafe...there is so little space in the medium. Remember he’s got to take that turn at a crawl...there is so little room on that medium with such a long truck...you end up crawling along all lanes of 70mph traffic.

I pulled a lot of u-es on city streets...but you got to be nuts to pull it on the interstates. Look at how much trouble he is in....the DOT is probably going to inspect all the company’s trucks now with the magnitude of the maintenance issues on this one truck...they got to fire him over this.

He must have had the give-a-sh*t attitude...demoralized attitude .
