I've seen them in "flocks" of six or more; I thought they were hawks, and that there must be carrion somewhere below them. They are usually flying along the Connecticut River. Saw them this morning as I waited at the stoplight at the foot of High Street.

About 2 years ago they used to roost in a dead tree behind the Shell station on Putney Road (Across from the Methodist Church).I counted at least 25 of them. You could watch them coming home to roost at dusk. Looked like an airport. That winter, the tree fell down. Now some of them are roosting in another nearby tree along the Retreat Meadows, I think there may be another roost somewheree the Austine School, But I haven.t located it.

Ah yes, the Vulture Tree as I used to call it. I have a couple of great pictures of the tree I took a couple years back when it was full of vultures (is there any way I can post them here?). It was sad when the tree went down.
A few months later I saw some vultures in a black locust between Friends of the Sun and the florist's (Carleys?). I haven't seen them in that area since.

The turkey vultures are a sure sign of spring. There is a large flock of them that roost in West Dummerston in some soaring pines. It is a real shame that the trees will be razed to make way for a Habitat/Nature Conservancy building project. We will miss the turkey vultures in West Dummerston.

My daughter and I were taking advantage of the sun earlier in the week to play frisbee in the driveway(she wants to be good enough to play Ultimate at BUHS). Looking south we spotted a group of vultures over I-91. She thought they must have found some carrion, but I figured they'd have been down on the ground out of our sight line if they had - does anybody know for sure?

Good to see the turkey vultures, along with three crocuses (croci?) and various small twittering woods-edge birds.
I saw geese honking north two weeks ago, and then a smaller group going south last week, so I guess they're as muddled about spring being here as we are.

My brother in northeast PA reported seeing hundreds of Canada geese heading north. Maybe they'll get turned around.

days.
And I saw a crocus (or rather, a few...) in a warm yard in the Forest
Square area.
