"If one of the state's certified bridge inspectors plummets to his death through a hole in the bridge deck, or if the bridge collapses under the weight of an inspector's clipboard, that bridge is automatically rated a 0.

If the inspector falls through, but survives, that's rated a 1."

Our state highway department considers the surface of the bridge between Winooski and Burlington to be in fair condition, so-so, middle-of-the-road if you will.

Silence.

Yeah, that's what I thought, too.

How could anyone with a straight face describe those 359 gelatinous feet as fair condition?..."
