The Windham County Sheriff's Department has called an afternoon press conference to discuss what it calls a "developing situation involving an employee of the department."
We called them for more info, but they refused to elaborate until the 3:00 p.m. press conference.
The same department made headlines two years ago when former Sheriff Sheila Prue admitted she stole tens of thousands of dollars in public money to use for personal expenses.

The Reformer is reporting that Captain Heidi Nelson, the second
in command, had an improper affair with a 17 year-old student at BUHS.
She's been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending further
investigation.

This makes me so sad -- I'm sure most of the ibrattleboro subscribers are too young to remember the Windham County Sheriff's Department for what it used to be, but I do. Mind you, I am only 50 years old, but William Graham built up a department "from scratch" that was the envy of many a sheriff's department (not only from Vermont, but from the country), and in the past few years I have seen it go downhill. The Sheriff's Deparment was always thought of as a second-rate law enforment agency until Bill Graham brought it up to a "FIRST CLASS" law enforcement agency. Isn't it a shame that in the past few years, it's been brought back to square one -- kind of reminds me of the Bush administration -- anyway, just wanted to put my two cents worth in about this and say to you guys, "Way to go," you should be really, really proud of yourselves for what you've wrecked in a few short years, that one person spent many, many years making.

I do find it disturbing. I am an Alumni of BUHS (so is Heidi) and I also have a Son who is going there. Now of course I think that we all should let the investigation play itself out and not to jump to conclusions, but if there is any truth to this it really smacks in the face of a response that I submitted on a different forum just a few moments ago. I too remember Bill Graham and Henry Farnum at the helm of the Sheriffs Dept. and remember when Shelia Prue was a Sgt. at Bratt. PD. But I also remember a High School that did not have a full time Town Cop AND Sheriff with offices and classrooms. I remember when your parents were allowed at that High School without a picture ID and a special visitors pass to go in and find out how well or poorly their children were doing. Now I hear of lock downs and searches. The military recruiters have more access to the kids than the parents do. I have lost faith with an institution that we are almost forced to entrust our kids to. I do not know what has happened over the years since I was a teen-ager (I am only 40) and walked the Halls of BUHS,to the Halls that our kids walk now,but it is something that should be looked at. I no longer live in Brattleboro, and should keep my opinions to myself, but it will always be my hometown. Good luck with this one Sheriff,it never would have happened under Bill's or Henry's watch.

What are you thinking? If you are found of wrong doing you can say good bye to your job in law enforcement. Good judgement. Was it worth it? But is this the only time something like this has happened to her or others in law enforcement or other emergency careers?

Hey, I thought that was hilarious too!
Great minds think alike.
It's also a bit sad, because I think if they had realized their gaffe they
wouldn't have printed it that way... I bet no one noticed.

I think Sheriff Clark seems to be handling the incident well enough. A problem with one employee (IF it's true - it would be pretty easy to make unfounded accusations about this kind of thing), this does not mean the whole organization is broken. I've actually been hearing good things about morale improving and greater professionalism.
