Brattleboro dog and wolf-hybrid licenses are available for the 2009 licensing period. All Vermont dogs and wolf-hybrids 6 months of age and older must be licensed at the Brattleboro Town Clerk's office annually on or before April 1. Vaccination against rabies is required by Vermont Statutes before licensing. A current vaccination means:
All dogs and wolf-hybrids over three months of age shall be vaccinated against rabies. The initial vaccination shall be valid for 12 months. Within 9 to 12 months of the initial vaccination, the animal must receive a booster vaccination.
All subsequent vaccinations following the initial vaccination shall be valid for 36 months.
If an animal has been spayed or neutered, the certificate issued by the veterinarian must be presented when licensing the animal for the first time. A current rabies certificate issued and signed by a veterinarian must be filed with the Town Clerk.
LICENSING FEES ON OR BEFORE APRIL 1
NEUTERED $14
UNNEUTERED $21
Specially trained assistance dogs may be eligible for a reduced licensing fee.
Dogs and wolf-hybrids licensed after April 1 will be charged a penalty. In addition, any person failing to license a dog or wolf-hybrid may be fined up to $100 and the dog or wolf-hybrid may be impounded. If an animal licensed last year has died or been given away, please contact the Town Clerk's office at 254-4541 Monday through Friday, 8:30 A. M. to 5:00 P. M.

Wolf-Hybrid Licenses Are Available

Does anyone else laugh whenever they hear the announcement, made once a year, that Wolf Hybrid license time has rolled around again?
Somehow, I love that we have Wolf-Hybrid licenses.
I mean, on the one hand, I just like the sound of it,
"Wolf Hybrid License"
It should be a sing title
or maybe an overally cerebral band name.
What would they play ? I don't know.
But I the other reason I perversely like the fact that we
have "Wolf Hybrid Licenses" is that it sounds like such a terrible idea.
It might not be a terrible idea,
Wolf Hybrids might be the sweetest puppy and dog like beasts that live on the planet for all I know.
But it sounds like well, breeding a wolf with a dog and keeping the puppies as pets.
It sounds like giving people I license to have their very own tank, provided that they, you know, take the appropriate tests and only purchase their ammo from reputable ammo outlets.
It sounds like giving a corporation whose mandate is to create a profit, a license to create a large quantity of nuclear waste and some electricity.
But somehow, the Wolf Hybrid License makes me smile, every time I hear it.

Rolf, remember Ursus, KC's old dog? He's a wolf-hybrid. I think Pixus is, too. Half the time you'd have no clue, unless like Ursus they get the golden eyes. Very sweet, hugely loyal. If I could have a dog, it'd be a part-wolfie. Though they retain the hunting instinct and can't be trusted out alone.

Hello Anikee,
Who is KC?
Even more interesting, is KC someone you know I once knew?
I find that the older I get, the less I know about what and who I once knew. IE, I foget people and things so completely, I don't even know I forget them.
For example, I do not remember ever knowing Ursus nor Ursus' owner, KC.
You wrote, " . . . they retain the hunting instinct and can't be trusted out alone."
Your scaring me a little...
What might they do alone that say, a Lhasa Apso might not ?
Eat the mailman ?
Howl at the moon and chase children with abandon?
Chase a squirrel and eat it?
When I was a kid, my mom watched a malamute do that once. But then, malamutes are probably 3/4 wolf.

The Wikipedia entry on hybrids mentions studies showing that they appear to be more likely to attack children:
"According to the CDC and the Humane Society of the United States, the wolfdog ranks sixth in the number of dog attack fatalities in the U.S.; with 14 hybrid-related fatalities between 1979 and 1998 in the United States.[25] [7] In 2000, DEFRA and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals released a lengthy study that attributed much of the reported aggressiveness of wolfdogs to the characteristics of the breeds of dogs the wolves are bred with. With both wolves' and dog's social habits revolving around a pack structure, wolfdogs may not show the dog's natural acceptance of humans as the dominant pack members, possibly resulting in physical confrontations.[1] Some purport that attacks may not even be caused by typical behavior patterns of aggression and dominance present in either parent species, but instead may be related to predatory instincts, as the majority of attacks involve small children.[1] Between 1981 and 1999, there have been 38 severe attacks and 13 fatalities caused by wolf hybrids in North America, with all victims being children."
I knew someone with a terribly vicious, untameable dog, which may have been a wolfdog or may have simply been vicious and untameable.
As with most mammals, the dog's behavior will probably depend primarily on its upbringing, but there are simply some specimens that are not trainable. The Jeffrey Dahmers of the dog world.
Of course, wolves are much smarter - and therefore much less predictable - than dogs. Which is why humans, historically, do not live peaceably with wolves.

Back in your coop days. I think KC cheecks in here and here on iBratt, even. He was a bartender at McNeill's and now works at Weathervane. Tall thin guy, dark hair, looks like he's dead.
That would explain why when I said hi to you last year on Main St, you looked at me like I was a complete stranger. LOL
