Second Leak At Vermont Yankee Found, Power Down To 40%
    Thursday, January 08 2009 @ 06:53 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: Christian Avard

Town News Another leak found at the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon.

    This just in from Reuters:

"Entergy Corp said it would reduce the 620-megawatt Vermont Yankee nuclear power station from full power to about 40 percent Thursday afternoon to fix a small water leak in the feed water system.

The feed water system supplies water to the steam generator.

Workers discovered the leak of about 60 drops per minute late Thursday morning on a 24-inch pipe. The company said the water, which is collected in a drain line, is only mildly radioactive.

The company did not say when the unit would return to full service. Electricity traders guessed the reduction would only last a few days.

Well, second this calendar year, but isn't it the 8th in the 12-month period? And didn't they have one in the summer and they never found the source so didn't fix it?

It's beginning to sound like the world's largest radioactive collander. Pasta a la ENVY, anyone?

Looks like there's more to the story. Here's the latest.

"The feed water system supplies water to the steam generator.Workers discovered the leak of about 60 drops per minute late Thursday morning on a 24-inch pipe. The company said the water, which is collected in a drain line, is only mildly radioactive. (my bold)

The company did not say when the unit would return to full service. Electricity traders guessed the reduction would only last a few days.

The company did say this reduction was not related to the leak in a reactor water clean up system valve gasket reported on Wednesday.

Work on the valve gasket is now scheduled for next week."

Step right up and see the big nuclear show

I imagine there's calliope music playing over the loudspeakers at VY 24 hours a day. "Boop boop boodee boodoo boop boop boodoo."

And their safety inspection team drives up in a car the size of a golf cart, and first one safety inspector gets out, with his polka-dot suit and giant shoes, followed by another, then another, and another, and another, and they keep coming out of this tiny little car. And then, without inspecting anything, they reverse the whole process, driving off with an out-of-round wheel making the car wobble up and down.

Gotta say, I love the caliope et al imagery.

Anyway, I've posted a new prayer, this one about Thursday's newest leak, which is not the same thing as Wednesday's new-ish leak. It's called Stop the Presses.
