    Anyone Without Heat?
    Wednesday, January 14 2009 @ 04:50 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: annikee

OtherIt's going to be killer cold the next couple of days. Right on time, I hear of 2 friends whose heat systems died. They're okay, but I'm sure there are lots more folk who aren't.

If anyone needs a place to stay til the mercury goes back up in their abode, I have a warm couch available. It only fits one, and please have no issues with smokers, for overnight. Send me an email.

What a caring and generous posting! I am housed and warm, and stuffy with a cold, but your kindness warms me throughout. Thank you.

I agree that's a nice offer Annikee. You know we may need to get used to this. I'm hearing that some climatologists are saying we may be headed for a mini ice age again. Apparently the arctic ice is thicker now than it was in 1979.

Cows pay taxes??! Now that's just carrying things too far!

I must chime in here, what a "warm"-hearted offer.

By the way just got an email from a friend in Canada. It was -27 at her house yesterday, they're hoping it goes UP to -12 today. Just some perspective as we face a couple of cold days.

My cousin in BC has been reporting -20sF, too. This cold could kill, and we should all be looking out for each other. Thanks for the kind words, but I was hoping to start a chain amongst us. If anyone knows anyone whose heat goes out, we could have a list of places for warm shelter for the night. We can do this among ourselves and everyone we know- and don't know- can be safe. A little inconvenience for a night is a small sacrifice to keep a fellow human okay. Please join me in being on a stand by list for someone in need of a warm place to sleep. Thanks.

You should read beyond the headlines, where you'll discover that "global warming" is actually global climate change, and wild swings in weather are part of what the science predicts.

I'm glad to see that Mr. Mike is finally admitting that global climate change is occurring. There is hope.

I heard folks are burning Al Gore's book to keep warm... Just change the label and start blaming everything on climate change, doesn't the climate always change.. it's called seasons.. I predict revisions of books and other materials by simply substituding Climate Change for the former Global Warming words, to make them current. ...... the digital revolution..

The definition of "climate" is not in dispute.

And wikipedia is invariably a good place to start when you know nothing at all about a topic, as is evidently the case for you.

Here is a bit of interesting facts for January 20 in a language you can understand:

Celebrities, politicians, and bigwigs using 600 private jets will produce 25,320,000 POUNDS of CO2

Personal vehicles could account for 262,483,200 POUNDS of CO2

In the parade, horses alone will produce more than 400 POUNDS of CO2

The total carbon footprint for the Inauguration will likely exceed 575 million POUNDS of CO2

It would take the average U.S. household 57,598 years to produce a carbon footprint equal to that of the new president’s housewarming party

I thought this was the GREEN PRESIDENT, wouldn't he been better off having this televised from a small energy efficient room... and sending all the right signals to the world ?

I know what you mean, SJD, it's amazing that people are so thick that they can't understand that "global warming" doesn't meant that every thermometer on earth is going to go up by a certain number of degrees in unison, and that the general "warming" of the earth can result in extreme weather of any kind.

There probably will have to be a change in terminology so that even those who are the most obtuse can understand the concept.

What's so political about -27 degrees....oh yeah, and Canada.

Unless you caught my obscure and very well hidden put-down of Sarah Palin by referencing her being able to see Canada from her hot tub......

Oh so my veiled slam on Palin went unnoticed....good.

I figured there was a misplacement somewhere there but for a moment I thought we were actually on opposite sides of the fence there but then I thought Heh, what would Melton have against cold temperatures in Canada....didn't make sense somehow.

Let me guess, did Mike make a reference to global warming being a big bunch of nothing because of the low temps? Guess he and some others don't know much about history, don't know much about biology and don't know much about climate change either (sing to the tune of What a Wonderful World it would Be. Seems folks that as the arctic oceans vaporize colder temperatures can occur as well as changes in cold weather patterns ... and in fact parts of northern Europe are predicted to ice over....

So if you had illusions of pulling out the beach chairs and floppy straw hats and luxuriating on the banks of the river here in December you may be in for a big surprise. Hey, we could be wearing mukluks in June....the problem here is that nobody's really sure how this global warming will affect particular areas...and that's the expression GLOBAL warming not Vermont warming or northern US warming.

Donations of blankets, coats, mittens, hats, scarves, etc. are all still
    needed. Food, too.

I was in the River Garden the other day and many people were using it
as a place to stay warm during the day.

The DIC, the Baptist church, the soup kitchens, all need help.

Also, if anyone knows anyone at the Window Quilts place: I've been trying to get them to donate the runoff remnants to stitch together for ground barriers, so far no response at all. A woman is waiting to sew the strips together, but we have no strips! Please, if you know the Window Quilt people, ask them to donate the remnants.
