    An Honest Mistake?
    Thursday, January 15 2009 @ 01:26 AM GMT+4
    Contributed by: mr.mike

PoliticsOk. It's been out for two days now and still silence here on ibrattleboro.com. I'm talking ,of course, of Timothy Geithner, President Obama's choice for Secretary of the Treasury.

    http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D95N4JF00&show_article=1

Now I gotta tell ya after they threw Richardson under the bus. I thought they'd be more careful. But this is even worse. This guy supposedly made "honest" mistakes on his tax filing. And we want this guy as secretary of the treasury? Which I will remind you, has just aquired new power under the bailout plan. New power, as in, sole power for making decisions about the money collected from us. One of the other things reported today in another source was that he claimed an overnight summer camp for his kids on his income tax.

If he was doing his own taxes shouldn't he have known this? Isn't this something the treasury secretary should be aware of?

Shouldn't the secretary of the treasury be like the main accountant for the entire system? What I mean is. Shouldn't the IRS be asking this guy policy and tax law questions?

" He paid some of the taxes in 2006, after an IRS audit discovered the discrepancy for taxes paid in 2003 and 2004. But it wasn't until much later—days before Obama tapped him to head Treasury late last year—that Geithner paid back most of the taxes, incurred in 2001 and 2002. He did so after Obama's transition team found that Geithner had made the same tax mistake his first two years at the IMF as the one the IRS found he made during his last two years there."

I'll bet some here will reference how many Republicans are saying they will still confirm him and that is true. I wonder if it's because they don't want any of their skeletons out of the closet?

Either this guy is a complete dope or he was avoiding the tax man. Here's a question for Joe Biden. Hey Joe was Tim unpatriotic for those couple of years that he didn't pay his fair share of taxes?

I can't wait to hear the excuses for this one. I'm sure some here will say that the system is so confusing and flawed that anyone could make these "mistakes". That I will agree with. However, there was only one candidate running that would've fixed that. And he wasn't running as a Republican or Democrat.

Either way this is yet another example of the corruption in Washington and I can't help but wonder if President Obama can't find anyone that isn't tainted with scandal.

Wow. Mr. Mike is complaining about a tax cheat. Mind boggling. Delicious. I can't even begin... wait, wait. I've got to breathe this in for a while.

Is that all you have to say? Never mind, this would
be a tough one to defend, even for you.

I just can't get past the idea of Mr. Mike, who proudly boasts of cheating on taxes and stealing nickels from beverage companies, complaining about anyone's tax irregularities. So it's a little hard to take his story seriously.

Whether or not he prepares his own taxes, which I doubt, this was no honest mistake. He even got reimbursed by the IMF for the taxes he was supposed to pay. A paid preparer would not have made that mistake repeatedly. This guy may be good at what he does, but he is not an honest man, and that's why he fits right in.

Now we have our esteemed senator Leahy who was so tough on Republican appointments, let us see how he handles this very obvious breach of honesty and fair play.

    I don't see a big deal here.
This is not corruption. Nobody is faulting Timothy Geithner's performance. Frankly, I do not care one whit about his taxes. Let's talk about whether or not he's qualified to do the work.

Speaking of jobs: isn't it the IRS's job to collect the taxes? Why isn't the IRS doing their job?

    "This is not corruption."

No it is not corruption, just a blatant attempt to avoid having to pay his taxes. Let' call it a defect in his integrity and honesty. The only reason he paid them retroactively is that he got caught. As Joe would say, it's unpatriotic. Is this who we want as head of the Treasury? Not me, no matter how talented he is.

The hypocracy shown here by iBratt regulars does much to minimize their relevance as objective observers. We all know how the discussion would be going if this were a Republican nominee.

    Geithner's Bipartisan Support

To my surprise, the Washington Post had a story this morning talking about how Timothy Geithner has received "a chorus of support" from "key Replublicans" as well as Democrats. Sen. Orrin Hatch, Republican from Utah says Geithner is "brilliant" and that despite tax problems, the country couldn't get "a better person for this position."

A Republican aide describes Geithner as "about as conservative a nominee as you could hope for in that position" which he felt explained why Republicans were unlikely to fight his nomination.

Not all Republicans are in favor of Geithner of course. Grassley of Iowa has reservations as does Jon Kyl of Arizona. Nevertheless, it seems likely Geithner will be confirmed.

This trend toward right-leaning cabinet appointments is reflective, I think, of the real Obama who is an establishment guy through and through. Then again, I think Obama himself is a reflection of just how far right the country has tilted over the Bush years -- people actually saw Obama as a liberal, going into this.

Oh well. All I can say is, Obama's economic plan better work or he's going to find out what bipartisan condemnation feels like as well as the adulation he's been enjoying the last couple months.

Times have changed or perhaps the out of the closet "hypocrisy" has changed, the MSM isn't playing up any of Geithner failings, certainly not to the point of any overly frothing discuss for failing to pay $42,000 in Social Security and Medicare taxes -- and then waiting to pay more than half of that amount – $26,000 – only after Obama decided to nominate him. Instead they label this as a "honest" mistake? Wow, maybe we could all use this tactic next time we don't pay our taxes. Al Capone went to prison for tax evasion.

Another oops in the vetting process covered up by BO's friends in the media. Thanks goodness there are other news sources other then the MSM, otherwise we would all be like mushrooms in a dark place fed sh%@!!

This guy Geithner may be good at what he does but... could you really trust him, heck Bernard Madoff was good at what he did until he got caught.

Apparently the swarmers are not willing to debate this black and white tax evasion issue. But it's just the beginning. They will be dodging many more improprieties over the course of the next 4-8 years. Soon we will get a look at how Al Franken cheated his way to a recount victory.

Thankfully I'm a Trustafarian and therefore independently wealthy :)

Obama is a smart pragmatist so I am not worried about nuclear power.

Unlike many of the bong and ponytail crowd, I don't long for some form of a "worker's paradise." I just want my civil rights protected (including abortion) and would like to see universal health care attempted in my lifetime.

It's too bad that the Libertarian party has just as many fruitcakes as the 2 major parties.

During the campaign, Obama spoke very glowingly (so to speak) about nuclear power and "clean coal." Two of the things I don't particularly like about him.

If VY is shut down, it will be a state decision, not Obama's doing.

***Soon we will get a look at how Al Franken cheated his way to a recount victory.***
What makes you think we won't get a look at how Coleman cheated his way to the initial victory? What makes you think a careful recount conducted over several weeks and scrutinized by both sides is less accurate than a hasty election night ballot count?

Sounds like typical Republican sour grapes to me. Still can't believe they handed Democrats the biggest mandate in more than a quarter century.
