    Feedback for Downtown Biz/Parking
    Tuesday, February 17 2009 @ 06:57 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: Anonymous

OpinionFor the second time in recent history I went downtown today in hopes of patronizing a particular business, and was thwarted by the parking situation.

I know it's prudent to plan ahead for parking - i.e. have proper change on hand. Today I'd decided at the last minute to head downtown and, I do this so rarely, I just don't think of it.

On the first occasion I parked on Main St, did not have change. I went into the Chamber of Commerce, where my request was met with a look like I had 2 heads. They didn't have change for the meter. BTW, if I was a biz downtown I would be sure that the Chamber has change for the meters on hand. Its petty cash, for goodness sake. And I would have stayed and shopped that day had the process not gotten so exasperating. No, I was not going to go wait for the crosswalk, then up to the bank (leaving my unmetered vehicle un-attended meanwhile), wait in line at the bank, get a little change, go back and wait for the crosswalk light, cross, get back up to my vehicle, feed the meter, head back over to shop.

Please dont say my life is too hectic if I can't invest the time to do the above. My life is just the way I like it, except I lack time to do some of the things I *want* to do, much less hack around Brattleboro looking for change to park, meanwhile risking getting a ticket.

Today's adventure was just as frustrating. I actually made a last minute appt at a downtown biz, couldnt find parking on High Street, finally parked in Harmony - didn't have the change - the dollar machine wouldn't take any of my bills. Cancelled appt.

Don't think I'll plan on parking or patronizing downtown biz again anytime soon, unless its for a relaxing massage and I have all day : )

Because Brattleboro is so out there, (a tiny town in a sliver of a state on a small planet, within some nondescript splash of the Milky Way) you can get away with some crazy stuff- like asking a stranger for a quarter.

Or if panhandling is too intrusive, ask someone to lend you a quarter, and pay them back, with interest.

So you won't be shopping downtown because you can't remember to bring or keep some change in your car? Okay.

I've wondered why there are not centrally located change machines, especially in the bigger lots. I've often given or borrowed change from others at the meter. And occasionally I've driven away when I haven't had change, no one was around, and I wasn't willing to risk a ticket to leave my car.

I agree with you, Brattleboro downtown should be doing all it can to encourage ease of shopping.

There are change machines in the Harmony lot and the parking garage.

And, y'know, y'could just pop into the nearest store and ask for change...

For heavens sake, if you went in to the Chamber, you were right near Brown and Roberts. I can't think of a better place to get change. They are friendly and the register is just inside the door.

I go down town once or twice a week, so I keep a handful of change in my ashtray. If you smoke, put it in an old change purse or a pill bottle. Refresh the supply from time to time and you will usually have enough change for parking. The problem is not the system, it is your disorganization and/or bull-headedness.

Do what I do. Consider Walmart downtown. Where the parking is free. And the sales tax is too.

Anonymous has a point. When a person has to learn to drive, find and buy a car, maintain and keep gas in it, arrange and pay for insurance, navigate thru traffic without having accidents...isn't it a little over the top to expect them to keep some change in their pocket when going to the big city? Sheesh!

i can't believe that nobody has mentioned this yet...

take a half hour or so out of your day and stop by the parking enforcement office and get a smart card for the meters... no need to carry change, you only use what you put on it, and you can just carry it around like a credit card... so simple... so easy... and most meters in downtown will utilize it...

OR do what i do and find a lot nearby that doesn't charge for parking (NEYT, the co-op, etc) and park there... how will they know you aren't shopping there? just don't think of it as all day free parking... :) usually one or 2 hours is fine for me though...

I have a really big peeve about people who use the co-op lot despite the many LARGE signs saying not to do so. I can't believe you're admitting this publicly AND recommending this to others!

I'd like to personally invite you to walk in my moccasins for a minute: gather three children under the age of eight. Park your vehicle on the most remote hill in the co-op lot. Walk into the co-op without any of your three children being hit by an insane Connecticut driver who is pissed there is nowhere to park but probably wasn't planning to shop at the co-op either. Fill your cart with groceries, including several heavy glass bottles of milk. Now get the three children and the heavy groceries back to the remotest hill without getting killed, where your task is to get all the groceries into the car without them rolling away from you while you keep track of the kids.

    Sound like fun?

There are other free places to park, if you're willing to walk a couple extra blocks. Don't use the freakin' co-op lot unless you're shopping there!!!

im honest to a fault when it comes down to it... i HAVE used the co-op parking lot to park and do other things in town... go ahead, throw the first stone.... i know i deserve it... :)

but i usually do go to the pay and display lots when i'm in town longer...

i don't have kids yet and probably won't have any anytime soon, so i would have a hard time with walking in your "moccasins", but let me comment a bit on it...
why take the kids with you anyway? was nobody available to watch them for 30 minutes or so? with 3 kids i would hope that there is some other parent (or even a friend) that could watch them while the shopping gets done... and yes, i do understand that usually both parents have to work nowadays to make ends meet (especially shopping at the co-op), but that doesn't excuse poor planning of time... nobody ever said having kids was easy, and if they did, they either didn't have custody of them, or were on some really good drugs, and i want them to share... (the drugs, not the kids) :)

i don't intend to offend, so i will stop here...

I was not seeking parenting advice. I was suggesting that the parking lot is for people who are buying groceries (and bagels and haircuts). My particular way of being inconvenienced by you parking where you don't belong is an amusing diversion, but beside the point.

But anyway, no, you cannot always leave your kids home and/or drugged when you need to do the shopping. Of course, the advice of people without children is also an amusing diversion. I assure you that I, too, was a much more knowledgeable person about how to care for children before I had any of my own.

Really Paula, why take the kids? I've found that you can leave the really little ones in the bath tub. Obviously it has to be dry, but if they aren't walking yet, there's no way they can crawl out. They can try, but they only get so far up the side before the slide back down.

For the toddlers, you can put them down for a nap and, as soon as they fall asleep, put them in a closet and lock it up. They'll be fine, and if they wake up, they can't hurth themselves on clothes and shoes. As an alternative, you can chain or tie them to a fixed object such as a radiator. Just make sure you don't chain them up to something that could tip over on them.

actually i was talking about the parents being drugged... i would never intentionally drug a child or recommend that... once the person hits 18, thats their choice, but i am a firm believer that if you have children, you should also be sober the whole time that you are watching them... just wanted to clarify.... :)

Oh, that clears that up! But you can imagine the effect of doing drugs just before grocery shopping, I'm sure. The co-op is already quite pricey enough without impaired judgment...not to mention the munchies. :)

I think the 3 of you should start a child rearing column
Karl can be the voice of experience as only given by someone who has no experience but knows how to do it

P can be the voice of experience as only offered by someone who really has experience

And Maus can be the comic diversion....oh, excuse me Maus, you are never a diversion I guess I mean the comic take on child rearing

May I just offer one comment which I think PM has sort of taken care of...Karl you commented that:
"that doesn't excuse poor planning of time."
I think you should offer to take of Melton's kids for about 2 weeks for at least 12 hours a day....then lets talk about your expertise in time management as it applies to child rearing. Whad'ya think Melton or is it too risky for the kids?

actually i have had some experience watching kids... not full time mind you, but experience nonetheless...

i lived with a roommate that had 3 kids for several years, and actually took care of my sisters firstborn from 2 months to 1 year most every night while she went on dates, shopping, work, etc... and my sisters firstborn had cloth diapers too! :)

i think that's part of the reason i don't have or want any kids of my own right now... knowing how much of a handful i was growing up (camcorder was great for this) i know that i am liable to get a child that is as bad or worse....

    We're just joking around, Karl.

You're very smart to put off having kids. My sister had her first when she was 18 and I was 15. Like you, I babysat whenever I wasn't at school or working. That was a formative experience for me as well. I had my first baby when I was 29. And my youngest is a year older than my sister's oldest grandchild.

If you had gone further up High Street you could have parked for free for two hours. There is a 300+ space parking garage in town. The garage has three change machines, There is a change machine in the Harmony lot. Or as someone said, get a smart card. They work at all the street meters. You don't have to worry about change and if you don't use all the time on the meter, simply log out and the remaining time is put back on your card.

Hey, regardless of how folks interpret this post, the reality is, I have found from my own business, that if it is one person's issue, it is others' as well.

The poster posted in "Opinion", I think Bratt commerce should take it as a gift and do with it what they will.

I'm glad someone mentioned smart cards - an actual prospective solution. Me? I don't like to park downtown because I drive a truck, and have had my towing mirrors hit twice while parked. (Please don't suggest I buy a Prius : )

Anyway - I always have to think twice when I visit Burlington, park my car, and walk away. I *wish* it was the same in Bratt.

I get a roll of quarters from the bank every couple months so I always have change with me. If you somehow run out, park on High St. near the flashing light. You get 2 hours free. There are some free spots on Elliot as well. You just have to walk a couple extra blocks, but it's long enough to get some change if you need to park closer to where you're shopping for some reason.

p.s. I have also noticed that the parking spaces on Elm St. are largely underutilized, and I'm betting the meter readers don't get out there too often. You could probably leave your car safely for a few minutes while you get some change.

What's the deal with the parking garage? Is it open? Is it metered? Max height?
    Feedback for Downtown Biz/Parking
    Authored by: pjmelton on Wednesday, February 18 2009 @ 03:45 PM GMT+4
It is open. There are entrances on Flat St and Elliott St. It is a pay-and-display lot, and the cost is a penny for two minutes. There are change machines if you don't have quarters. You put money in the machine, push the green button for the ticket and then display it on your dashboard so the meter reader can see it through your windshield. I am not sure of the max height, because I drive a tiny car, but there is a bar at both entrances with the height marked.

There is also a lot on High St., if height is an issue. Half the price of parking on the street or in Harmony (same as the garage - 2 minutes per penny), and quite convenient to downtown shopping, library, post office and the, er, financial district. I have rarely seen it full. It's another pay-and-display. You can't park directly in front of the door of the shop you're going to (unless you're getting a massage at Jasmine or having your cards read at the New Age store next door to it), but it's less than a block from the Main/High intersection - not exactly a major hike.

I never park in the Coop lot unless I'm shopping there because of years living in a place where your car would be gone...towed...if you did that....park in the Coop lot and go to Sams and boom your car is gone...I'd like to think it's because I'm thoughtful but probably the fear factor thing is going on there too.

From my perspective the parking downtown is a breeze....so many options so many open spots so little walking and no $25 for 1/2 day charges.

But loved the description of shopping with three young children....

I remember my sister calling me one day (4 kids under the age of 5) and saying she had seen a woman that day with 4 kids under the age of 5 and thought "Oh man, that poor woman, how does she get anything done" before the realization kicked in that she was that woman! At which point she burst into hysterical laughter.

Last I knew, the coop had a parking lot guy, who put warnings on your windshield the first time, then got your car towed the second. Is he gone?

I enjoyed Paula's description, too. My mother took all of us shopping. As soon as we were able, we carried things. You didn't get into too much trouble in the store when you had a 5# sack of flour to carry. Only recently I realized that she had the whole thing planned to keep us busy. Since we walked, one had the wheeler cart with the very heavy and fragile in it. The rest carried paper bags of groceries. She had us trained.

All these idealistic suggestions. Perhaps many of you are from the town of Perfect? Where there is always a pile of change in your car (as well as your spouse’s car, and your company car)?

In spite of trying my best to keep coins handy, I frequently find myself with too little or none at all.

Panhandling for change? Are you nuts? People, can we please keep the suggestions realistic?

I do like the Smart Card idea.

I hate parking in Brattleboro. Just this morning, I watched the car in front of me nearly smash into the back of a parked car- fortunately, the driver swerved just in time.

And why are so many of the meters “bagged”? As if there wasn’t enough hassles parking downtown, I find bags over the parking meters… Summer, Winter, Spring or Fall.

I don’t live in Brattleboro… nor do I live in Perfect. I am not familiar with the other lots, but I do want to thank you all for informing me about them. I will look into them. I do have a town map from your Chamber of Commerce, and I will mark the parking lots where the coin machines are.

Now if someone could find a fix for “Malfunction Junction”! Maybe convince the State of NH and the Dept. of Transportation to replace those decrepit old narrow twin bridges going into Hinsdale also.

    Now that would be ‘Change’..

I'm not from the town of Perfect, but I am from the town of Prepared. If the issue is being too broke, I can empathize. But just not having your own act together is no call to arms, to me. There are too many options.

There used to be a light at Malfunction Junction, but that was thrown out years ago. Since then, I think the only thing done has been to ignore it.
