From Andes Mountains to Green Mountains: "Soy Andina" Film About Peru and Dance Comes to Vermont
    Saturday, March 14 2009 @ 01:04 AM GMT+4
    Contributed by: Anonymous

Media"Soy Andina," the award-winning documentary film about Peru, dance, immigration and identity, is coming to Vermont.

Mitchell Teplitsky's film will screen in Brattleboro twice -- once for the general public, and once for students, faculty and guests of World Learning's SIT Graduate Institute. Director Teplitsky will be at both events for discussion.

    Public screening
    Sunday, March 29, 2:00 pm
    Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery
    139 Main Street Brattleboro, VT
    Admission: $8 / $ 5 kids under 12, seniors
    Directions/more info: 802-254-9276 or www.hookerdunham.org

In addition, World Learning's SIT Graduate Institute is hosting a screening for students, faculty and invited guests, sponsored by the Student Activities Office, on Friday, March 27, 7:00 pm.

The film tells the stories of two Peruvian women living in New York -- Cynthia Paniagua, a modern dancer raised in Queens, and Nelida Silva, a folk dancer from the Andes -- who return to Peru to reconnect with their roots and an astonishing world of traditional festivals and dance.

"Soy Andina is a great portrayal of life in Peru, the search for identity of immigrants in the USA, and a wonderful introduction to Peruvian dance and music -- it was hard to stop smiling and moving my body!" said Bill Mitchell, Professor of Anthropology at Monmouth, which hosted a screening last year.

The film premiered at Lincoln Center in Fall 2007, toured Peru as a U.S. Embassy cultural exchange program, and has gone on to screen at 40 festivals, cultural centers and schools around the USA and Europe.

Soy Andina on DVD, with English and Spanish subtitles, can ordered online at http://www.soyandina.com.

Director Mitch Teplitsky will appear as a live guest on the Monkey and Mama radio show, WVEW 107.7 FM, with hosts Chandra and Tara, Friday March 27, noon-1 pm (the show is also streamed live from www.wvew.org)
