Rep. Welch Meeting at Latchis Disappoints On Many Levels
    Tuesday, March 24 2009 @ 05:24 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: tomaidh

    OpinionDear Editor,

I went to the Latchis on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, to hear what P. Welch had to say about the stimulus. For the most part the audience was full of admirers. The meeting was set up by a couple of supporters, one of whom acted as the Master of Ceremonies.

Peter behaved like a returning hero with the proverbial bacon to feed his hungry family. He was received for the most part as such; the grateful children praised and thanked him. I could not have opened their intellect to help them understand the bacon he offers is the bacon he simply stole first from your back yard.

As I waited my turn, I decided to not attempt to change the minds of the adoring crowds but rather to ask a pertinent question with regards to policy towards corporations on the Federal Government's part, which if he answered with clarity and understanding of the problem would give him a tiny modicum of credibility in my mind.I waited as other people were entertained for minutes on end. I saw Richard Davis treated with condescension bordering on ridicule Welch reassured Richard " Everything is going to be okay. It will be okay! " almost exactly imitating a father trying to pretend for his young son in order to get him to sleep.

For all the real community work Richard Davis has been up to it was awful to see Welch use his position to belittle Richard. It was awful to see Richard with his legitimate and real doubts trying to express his lack of confidence in Welch and the Federal Government et al in a potent manner. He was clearly struggling with how to be politely submissive to Welch. It appeared that Welch was the master and Davis his servant.

My turn came and I introduced myself adding he has not yet impressed me with his work, Welch responded " Yes Emily I am aware you feel that way" .Here the MC began to shift his weight. He stood up and walked towards me as I was framing my questions. I stood against his undercurrent of intimidation.

My question was this: Do you think it is time to create a new set of legal priorities for corporations that places protection of the environment above the priority of profit for shareholders as a matter of law and legal premise ?

I also wanted to ask about Welch's willingness or not to expose the Federal Reserve for its private status, and the problems of unconstitutionality that stems from our money regulated and charged interest that goes to private,( very private) VERY wealthy units behind the scenes (?!). What should we do- or can we do- about grotesquely wealthy individuals who in the vastness of their wealth become godlike in their ability to wield influence over vast numbers of very very hard working individuals who in the minuteness of their wealth are expendable and disposable assets.

In other words I had two questions. I placed them together. And while I had taken under a minute to verbalize them, Welch answered the first by saying simply " I think it up to people to do that not government". He was about to pass over the other matter, and when I asked him to address it, I was interrupted and over-talked by this MC who indicated I was out of line to expect a second question..

I was pulled aside and further chastised for my lack of submissiveness by a woman who tried to make it about ME when it was only truly about inappropriate behavior on the part of government, with Welch of course as part and parcel .

Then someone asked about the banks, and Welch had no clear answer, but I knew someone in the room who DID. The people in the room could benefit from what this other person had to offer, what was I to do ?

I waited for Welch to pause, which he did (because he hadn't an answer), I said "excuse me?" Welch turned and acknowledged me. I said there is someone here who IS working on that in the Common Good Bank : Tom Finnell, and would you please tell more about it? But as Tom rose from his seat the tall MC unceremoniously interrupted matters yet again and by his own actions reduced what was otherwise an entirely civil exchange to a disruptive scene.

Later I apologized to the MC to see if he would be gracious enough to offer in return to me the apology I deserved more than he . But he did not. He frowned at me.

This is how and why we are stuck. People try to ingratiate themselves to persons of power and influence by driving away all but the submissive. We cannot be submissive and assert our right(s) concurrently. We the people are always reduced to soundbites sometimes by our own kind-,and edited by the editor- 500 words or less, while public servants have football fields to avoid responsibility.

Emily Peyton (submitted with her permission)

And this was a question to Peter Welch a relatively green Washington politician. Can you imagine if they had asked the master of arrogance, Patrick Leahy or Comrad Sanders. These guys are ingrained in the cesspool of Washington.

I'm glad that you posted this. This is the problem with this country. They are suppose to serve us and be humble in that endeavor.

The only fix is term limits.

I was at that meeting, too, and Emily's portrayal of her interaction Representative Welch isn't exactly as I remember it.

Rude an inappropriate is they way I remember it. He's an elected representative, and we all have the right to question his actions - but not anywhere at anytime and without regard the everyone else in the room. It was not a forum for Emily Peyton to cross-examine Peter Welch.

And that opinion, my friend ,is what seperates the Sheeple from the People. They should be ready to be asked questions at any time. Especially when it comes to our money and the future of our country.

Are they not answering to those who put them there?

No Mr. Mike, It's NOT right

    Mr. Mike,

Rudeness, even if it's toward someone of the political party that you
despise, is uncalled for. Respect for elected officials is not giving in,
but something my parents (of the GI generation) taught all of us kids.
Perhaps I'm "old school". In my day, you wore presentable clothes
when you traveled, went out in public, to church, etc. You were quiet
in libraries and places where it was a public space. You were taught by
your two parents (divorce was less common when I was a kid) that
you didn't talk back to adults as kids.

Now much of that is lost. It's too bad. You see it today in
embarrassing public displays of rudeness, where adults act like
children, ranting and raving, and their own children are often behaving
even worse, like a bunch of undisciplined wild animals.

It's one thing to disagree with another politician, but to get up and act
rudely is childish and uncivil, whether you are from the right or the
left wing, or a "moderate" in the middle.

The old days weren't perfect, as anyone who remembers "separate but
equal" in the segregated South would quickly attest. But in some
ways, we've lost something when radical or noisy "adult children" can
get up and disrupt a civil event, and they get accolades for doing so.
That's the start of the downfall of a civil society.

I was there as well and remember the incident in question. I applaud someone for their passion when they wanr answers from elected officials, but I am much more apt to want to listen to what someone has to say when they present themselves in a mature and professional manner. You don't have to respect a politician's views and actions, but you're not going to get anyone on your side if you're not respecting the position they hold and presenting yourself as a respectable adult.

Well, you obviously weren't there and don't know what you're talking about, nor did you read what I wrote. Of course there's nothing wrong with asking a question and expecting an answer, that's just not what happened.

I was not there, so I am relying on these accounts to try to understand what happened.

The charge that Welch avoided giving straight answers to reasonable questions is being answered via attacks on the manners of the questioners. But another part of the complaint is that the moderator used his position to prevent a truly open discussion and forced the questioners into a choice of either shutting up and sitting down, or of demanding a response.

I am particularly concerned about the description of the way Richard Davis was treated. Is it an accurate description? Was Davis patronized and put in a position in which, to keep an appearance of dignity, he just had to give up an trying to get an authentic response?

Would people who were there -- particularly those criticizing Emily Peyton's condcut -- please comment on the way the moderator conducted the meeting, and on how Richard Davis was treated.

    Steve,
You definitely need to take the letter with a grain of salt. The moderator didn't move to shut her down until she had already made a comment, and asked a "when did you stop beating your wife" type question - loaded with her own personal political agenda. I don't blame him for not trying to answer. The moderator moved to shut her down when she started to rant on what I remember as having something to do with impeachment and corporations and Peter's lack of support/support thereof. She didn't seem interested in any answer except the ones she wanted to hear, if you know what I mean.

She put the moderator, Jeff Lewis of the BDCC, in one hell of a position. Welch was a guest, invited to talk to people in Windham County about the stimulus bill, and it seems perfectly appropriate that he should demand a respectful dialogue. She had her chance to speak, and there were people waiting behind her to speak. It would have been unfair to everyone to let her dominate the dialogue, as she was trying to do.

As far as Richard Davis goes, you'll have to ask him how he felt, but Emily is focusing on one small part of what seemed like an amicable exchange between the two, and taking it out of context. Welch was not mocking Davis or being sarcastic, at least from my viewpoint.

I was not there at the meeting. I do not know Welch or Peyton.

I do know Jeff Lewis and he is a fair and honorable person.

As a vegetarian, I find this bacon metaphor very strange. Why is there bacon in my backyard? How did it get there? If Peter Welch wants to remove all this bacon I have, it's fine with me. I don't eat the stuff.
    Pork Barrel term
Authored by: Mr. Buddy Love on Wednesday, March 25 2009 @ 11:12 AM GMT+4
The term for political handouts, "pork barrel" politics, originated early in
American history, when slaves were sometimes given a barrel of salt
pork as a reward and had to compete among themselves to get their
    share of the handout.

Yum! Pork is tasty with baked beans, with eggs, or slowly roasted over a
    spit, bar be que style.

    Hello Kitty.
