    Microbe Brewers' Supply
    Sunday, May 24 2009 @ 09:11 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: imhennessy

    BusinessHi everyone,

I'm announcing the start of a new business here in Brattleboro. I will be opening a brewshop in the (hopefully) near future called Microbe Brewers' Supply. I know some of what I will be carrying: equipment, supplies and ingredients for making beer and wine; cultures and equipment for yogurt, as well as rennet and cheese moulds; and lacto-fermentation supplies.

What other types of product should I be carrying? Which specific items or brands would you like to see? I hope people will take this as an opportunity to ask me to carry anything they normally have to do without, travel for, or order by catalog or from the internet.

Please also feel free to quiz me about anything you think is related, either in the comments, or through microbebrewer (at) gmail (dot) com

    What a great idea!

How about koji for making your own miso? Mind you, I have never tried but always wanted to. Just never found a place to get the koji.... :)

Do you have a location yet?

I don't have a location totally pinned down yet. I have what looks like a great location with a landlord who is excited by the store idea. It seems to be just a matter of details from here.

Koji, never heard of it. I'll have to see if I can get some.

Since I just looked up koji, and discovered that it is also used to make sake and other alcoholic drinks, I will definitely have to find a source for it. It seems to be a very interesting fungus.

Great idea. We thought that it was odd there were no homebrew shops in our area. Of course, we are beer geeks but there are plenty of us around Brattleboro! Keep us posted...

I think I'll end up talking about it so much you'll want me to stop. I've probably already reached that point with some people!

    This is cool!

I need someone to hold my hand for the first attempts at making my own beer.

I'll look forward to checking this out.

Well, I just started my first batch of beer on Friday, but I've made quite a bit of other stuff, including some sap beer I just bottled. If you start out with an extract kit, it seems easy as all get out. I'm saying that both from my own experience, and everything I read and hear from more experienced brewers.

I am hoping to host/run/organize brewing parties and/or workshops where we can all make our mess together and clean up together and not offend too many people with the smell.

I am also, slowly, building a book collection I am calling the Brattlebrew Free (as in beer) Library. Currenly it has just a few books I've found about making cider, wine and beer.

If you're interested in brewing I would also recommend the Brattlebrew mailing list: groups.yahoo.com/group/brattlebrew

Good luck with your new business. Sounds like it could be useful. There is a place near my house that started as a supply house for all things beer making. They then expanded to include beer making paries and have a place on site where groups of folks get together and make beer. Also have expanded into wine as it uses a lot of the same equipment and appeals to another group of folks that help generate $ for the business.

Do you mind if I ask where this is? I thought I'd tracked down all the places around here in this business, but not knowing the histories of each establishment, I'm not sure I know that one.

I definitely think that serving the broadest set of interests is going to be crucial to this enterprise. The other massively important part, which is intertwined with that, is engagement in both the brewing and broader community.

I think this whole thing is a great idea!

I'm a local homebrewer and I only know of two other local people, one who is pretty much "inactive". I'd like to meet more people to learn and share with.
I like he idea of being able to just buzz down to Eliot St when an idea for a different brew strikes!

I'm willing to offer my thoughts to anyone who my have questions about homebrewing that I might have the answer to!

Ivan, I'm psyched to hear about your new business. We generally need to mail order in our cheese making supplies. I'd love to support somebody local instead.

We have a farm where I am doing small batches of various goat cheeses right now. But only soft cheeses thus far. I've not yet taken the plunge into hard cheeses. But a local source source for things like cheese presses and such might push me soon over the edge I've wanted to travel anyways.

Do you already having sourcing and such lined up for things like hard cheese molds/presses and such?

I have a local wholesaler lined up for cheese/yogurt supplies, and will be placing my first order with them as early next month as I can manage. They carry information, molds, cultures, rennet, pretty much everything for home and small scale cheese production.
