In follow-up to my posting earlier about my friend's purse that was stolen from the Brattleboro Music Center during a recital reception, the purse is returned! An anonymous person found it at the Elks Home and brought it to her home. The money and credit cards were missing but she has her driver's license and date book!
Brattleboro residents should know, as we learned this week, that robbery is happening all over town and the neighborhoods near Walnut Street and north have been hit hard. Just this week The Gathering Place was broken into and narcotics were stolen, attempts were made to break into other buildings, a purse was stolen at Adaggio's and Subway... I wish the Reformer kept us updated more on these events. Knowledge is power. Thank you for you well wishes!

Thank you so much for the update! It's also really valuable to know about the other robberies taking place. I'm sure if I read the police blotter every day, I would know - but I don't. Why would I? Sounds like time to start being more careful.

Thanks for updating us.
If anyone wants to do some police reporting, the Police Department will
fax press releases that you can summarize and share here. (I gave up
faxes a few years ago).

In our town, you can sign up for email updates from the police department. We get reports of robberies in neighborhoods, particularly when pattern is apparent (like Bratt, we are right off the highway allowing for easy on-easy off access). More importantly for older folks, we get reports of scams going on. Yesterday, one was reported that someone will call your house saying you missed jury duty. When the person says they didn't receive a notice, the caller asks for their social security # and BINGO, indentity theft. While one would say, that's crazy, I would never do that, these callers are very convincing and threaten legal action and other things to get the SS#.
This initiative came about as a result of a citizen-police committee, the kind Bratt just cancelled. Ours started to fizzle until the committee decided, let's do something together to help the community rather than just look into complaints.. A win-win, positive outcome.. Now neighbors can be fully informed and cooperate with the police leading to a better community ewnvironment.
People should be very aware of their belongings anywhere, whether it is New York City or charming Bratt. These thefts sound like pros are involved, something to consider.

Just to let folk know: The SelectBoard agreed NOT to eliminate the
Citizen-Police Communications Committee (CPCC) quite yet. They
decided to give more time to supporters to encourage citizens to come
forth and apply for the 5, now vacant, positions.
Information can be obtained by calling the town at 251-8133, emailing
the town at cpcc@brattleboro.org or visiting the committee's website
(One needs to cut and past the complete web address to the address
bar... as I preview this, for some reason the complete address does
not get highlighted as a link.)

Thanks, I'm glad.
It looks like it's time to act like we live in a city; the Dummerston burglaries that did get in the paper are just one bit of what's going on.

The Reformer SHOULD be printing stories that relate to the community
but those of us who have cancelled our subscriptions long ago realize
they are not a community paper.

Ok, since my friend's purse was stolen, learning about series of crime in Brattleboro, and not reading it in the Reformer I have made the decision to NOT renew my Reformer subscription that soon ends. I will Feed ibrattleboro's Kitty instead! I hope the Reformer reads this!!!!
I was holding off my anger thinking the Weekend Reformer would surely report something about the crimes in the Walnut Street block but nothing! I am a reasonable person and understand that crime is increasing dramatically in Brattleboro and everywhere. But too many local events important for citizen's awareness are ignored by the Reformer. I appreciate it as a community newspaper and admit to being charmed at yet another photo of the geese on the Meadows. But it is not a "news" paper. I commend ibrattleboro for what you offer our community. Thank you! You have my gratitude and subscription money!
And what's with the $30K in the brief case? I probably don't want to know.
Two juveniles are being charged as adults in separate BF burglaries as well. A third juvenile is being tried in family court instead. I wonder how they decided that.
