According to a recent filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the North Carolina-based telecommunications firm, FairPoint Communications, would likely file for bankruptcy by 2009-end, in case its debt holders refuse to allow the company to defer its interest payments.
Should this happen, what's going to happen to phone and DSL service in our area? There are many local areas that have only one phone carrier, and only one hi-speed provider option.

So, they'd keep plugging along (maybe someone would buy them),
with a court looking over their shoulder. Of course, if they are too big
to fail, they'll get billions of dollars like a bank or GM.
It is an interesting question, though, about being dependent on few
companies for so much of our lives and business.
It's another reason that Municipal Telecom would be a smart
investment, too. We could build our own system, pay ourselves, and
have an alternative for voice and data communications.
