Stop The Madness On Elliot St And Harmony Parking Lot. Crack Down On Thugs, Not Skateboarders!
    Wednesday, July 01 2009 @ 01:57 PM GMT+5
    Contributed by: scrispe

OpinionI am writing in response to last week’s report in the Reformer on Brattleboro’s new policy of “zero tolerance” for skateboarding. The fact that skateboarders were juxtaposed in the same breath as underage smokers, illicit drug activity and loiterers is appalling and ludicrous.

The strategy that the town is taking, in lumping skateboarders in with inherently criminal activity, demonstrates a lack of critical thinking by these people. They fail to understand a group of people who are inherently good and have done nothing wrong.

Brattleboro’s de facto ethnic cleansing of skateboarders is reprehensible and outrageous. There is effectively no place for skateboarders to go and engage in this healthy, creative, individualistic and special activity.

If people bothered to take the time to listen to youth, maybe they would achieve some rational understanding. Instead, Brattleboro implements a zero tolerance policy which quashes a vital recreational
outlet and results in more kids being on the street, with nothing to do, more idle time, and increased risk to becoming ensnared by the trappings of drugs and alcohol.

It’s long past time for people who misunderstand, stereotype and judge skateboarders to take the time to listen and try and understand, rather than casting aspersions in a blindly blanketing manner that is so distorted and far from the truth.

Sure, there are a few bad apples in every bunch, but that equally applies to skateboarders as it does doctors, politicians and bankers. I am in my 30s. I try to skateboard every day and I’ve been skateboarding since 1985. I have not had a single sip of alcohol in more than 17 years, let alone drugs or cigarettes. I am a practicing attorney with a doctoral degree. I don’t even have as much as a speeding ticket let alone a criminal record. I serve on boards and volunteer for several community organizations, including a homeless shelter.

Those who blindly judge should take a look at people like me and recognize that we are not criminals, thugs, or drug users ... and also realize that there are many productive, hard working citizens who love to engage in the healthy creative outlet that is skateboarding.

Brattleboro is a special town, but I am concerned about what has been occurring lately. I work in an office above the Harmony Parking Lot. Many downtown workers and residents are afraid. They are afraid to walk into the parking garage. They are afraid to walk on Elliot Street, or through the Harmony lot.

No one should feel afraid in Brattleboro. No person should have to feel intimidated. By allowing these thugs and derelicts to party all day and night in the streets, we have created a ghastly, unsafe environment for people here.

I would love to see the police — 24 hours a day, seven days a week — at the confluence of the Harmony lot and Elliot Street. Their presence would clean the area up real fast. If they issued large tickets for ordinance violations, and then when the offenders didn’t pay, rounded them up and arrested them, you’d see the streets clear out in a matter of weeks.

The only people who should be afraid in Brattleboro are the lawbreaking thugs who hang out and harm people. They should be very afraid, not only of the Brattleboro police, but of citizens who will not stand for it any longer.

For Brattleboro to have taken this long and still not provide skateboarders with a place to go is nothing short of inexcusable. The tiny towns of Wardsboro, Wilmington, Stratton and Londonderry all have skateboard facilities, yet Brattleboro, which is the hub of southern Vermont, does not.

Skateboarders have been given the run around for so long now that the frustration is getting to be unbearable. Until last week the Brattleboro Police had been great about tolerating skateboarders and being sympathetic to the fact that we are afforded no other space to go by the town.

But now, with the new “zero tolerance” policy, it is just adding insult to injury and we must not stand for it. The police need to round up the thugs who come to the Harmony lot to sell drugs, get drunk, start fights and mistreat women. I have zero tolerance for these people and it’s obvious to me that we should instead celebrate skateboarding, and focus our efforts on eliminating these thugs who, in sharp contrast to skateboarders, are hurting property and other people.

*Update since this appeared in the Reformer:

My office is above Harmony parking lot. I recently witnessed the aftermath of a man being beatdown in Harmony Parking lot in broad daylight at 3 in the afternoon. Yesterday, another brawl broke out right in the middle of the parking lot. Something must be done. What is happening in our community? This needs to stop!!

    Stop the madness, indeed.

I've been working in Brattleboro for the past two weeks. I've made a point of frequenting one of the eateries that opens onto the Harmony lot for each of the ten days, and have walked through the Harmony lot to shop, well, browse, at Elliot street businesses in the late afternoon on several occasions.
After reading about what are, apparently, daily riots, drug wars, and brawls in the Harmony lot, I kept my eyes peeled, expecting to see some serious shit going down.

Nothing happened. I think all this fear and fury is blown out of proportion. Or maybe the Harmony Lot "thugs" just fall apart and run away when they see me coming.

I despise people being alarmist and over dramatic.
    However,
I can only speak for myself when I say that in my office I do not see daily occurences of brawls, drug deals, random violence, etc...

However in the past two weeks there has been:
    1) A fatal stabbing. 2) A man being beatdown in broad daylight by 4-5 people and carried away on a stretcher. 3) A brawl.

My opinion is that three events like this in a period of two weeks is bad enough for the concern generated.

    Take care, Spencer.

I can say bad things do happen in Harmony Parking lot, but not as often as they are made out to have. I think because a few incidents to some seem like many where as to others do not seem that bad (not sure I worded that right.)

Anyhow I agree that instead of this crackdown what we need is to take care of the individual problems as they happen instead of just kicking everyone out including those who mean no harm.

As a lawyer, I would think you would see that enforcing an ordinance is not the "ethnic cleansing" you claim it to be. And even as someone who does not claim Jewish descent, I'm appalled that you made that analogy.

If you don't like an ordinance, try to change it. Find out why it was enacted in the first place. See if you can get enough people behind you to get the Select Board to listen.

I don't agree that skateboarders have a "right" to zip slalom-style among pedestrians on sidewalks and cars in parking lots. I just personally feel the risk of injury is too great. I'd feel the same way if there were suddenly a group of roller bladers doing the same thing--and I'd try to get the skateboard ordinance to include any tiny-wheeled transportation.

You're right about the violence, but it's also the responsibility of citizens to help put a stop to it. DId you call the police when you witnessed that "beat down"? If not, you're part of the problem, not the solution.

    TRUMAN:

    1) The definition of analogy is "a comparison or similarity between two things"
Ethnic cleansing in general terms is the eradication of a group.
Not allowing skateboarders to skateboard anywhere in town, and on top of that, not having a skateboard facility of any kind, is in a sense eradicating skateboarders as a group of people because there's no lawful place to do it. Therefore, skateboarding is completely eradicated. I did not say that eliminating skateboarders was AS bad as the genocide of cultures throughout history. It's obviously infinitely less important then say the genocide of American Indians. I was using strong language intentionally to get a point across that people just aren't getting. Perhaps I should have used a different term, but in any event, I in no way said it was AS bad, just comparable in one certain respect. It is totally uncomparable in about 10 other respects and I recognize that.

    2) I HAVE tried to change these things. I have sat through countless meetings - Selectboard meetings, committee meetings, planning meetings, etc... We keep getting the run around. I've been doing this for years, it's not like it was a knee jerk reaction. We are frustrating because we are getting the run around at the municipal level and in our opinion have not been given the attention and level of seriousness deserved.

    3) I agree. Skateboarders do not have the right to zip along and interrupt commerce and pedestrians. I'm the first to say any skateboarder acting like a big jerk should be cleaned off the street by the police. But for those who aren't; leave them alone.

    4) The police were already there, as were the paramedics when I saw the aftermath of the beatdown. Otherwise, of course I would've reported it. I did call Chief Wrinn just three days ago to report a brawl in the Harmony Lot.

    Take care,
    Spencer.
    Not genocide

I completely agree with everything you say, with one exception. There is NO comparison between suppressing skaters and genocide. I hope in your future activism on this topic, you will stop exaggerating in this way, which not only is offensive but also distracts from your argumentative credibility.

I think a lot of people are on board with your POV, but what is the next step? Since the skate park is in long-term runaround mode, what can we do about changing the ordinance or striking it from the books altogether? Are there any legal places to skate? What can we do to work together to make a policy that makes sense for everyone? As I've said before and you are saying here, none of this can happen unless all parties are invited to the table to discuss this issue. Don't leave the skaters and their supporters out of the conversation.

    Changing an ordinance
    Authored by: cgrotke on Thursday, July 02 2009 @ 06:21 AM GMT+5
PAYT was reconsidered after a call was made to to a sympathetic
    Selectboard member.

John Allen has spoken up for skateboarders in the past.

    ...

I think one of the problems that needs to be addressed is the public
reporting on incidents downtown. I get the feeling many people
witness the same thing, then all say they saw something, which
makes it sound like the event happens often.

For example, we had the nude guy from Arizona walking around a
couple of years ago. From the reports, one might assume there were
nudists all over town all the time. Not true, but it led to hysteria and
    our world famous anti-nudity ordinance.

My request: when you say you saw something downtown - please list
the day, time, and location, and describe what you saw. That way,
others can know if it was the same thing they saw.

That's a very sensible suggestion Chris.

I remember keeping an eye peeled for the naked people in Harmony Lot that year.

    I never saw one.

I did see one naked man, once, once, in my ten years in Brattleboro.

I am betting it was Mr Arizona.

But yeah, from the reports, Brattleboro was almost over run with naked people.

    Beautiful.
Should be force-viewed to the selectboard, like in 'A Clockwork Orange'.
