    Moving Entergy's Nuclear Fenceline
    Thursday, July 09 2009 @ 10:31 AM GMT+4
    Contributed by: ed

OpinionThis is from the Public Service Board website.

    "Public Hearings Scheduled:
Docket 7530 In Re Petition of Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee, LLC, to locate a new perimeter fence is scheduled for July 13, 2009, at 7:00 P.M., at the Vernon Elementary School Cafeteria, 381 Governor Hunt Road in Vernon."

Entergy Nuclear wants to move the fence farther away from their leaking reactor because they can't comply with radiation limits.

I say, sure, let ENVY move the fence. Move it to the other side of the Vernon Elementary School -- the school's too close to the reactor. Shut down Vernon School and have Entergy build a new school where it's safe. The radiation exposure limits are not set to protect growing children. The limits are based on damage to healthy adult men, not on the effects to more vulnerable people.

And if everything is so hunky-dorey at Entergy, why haven't the radiation calculations from last year been released yet? Still massaging the data?

This is as good a place as any to let people know that that I got my
letter of appointment, and Brattleboro will have a Fence Viewer for
    another year.

My jurisdiction doesn't extend to this fence, however. My Vernonian
counterpart will have to take this up.
    Congratulations, Chris

May your fences be tight and strong.

I'm sorry your authority doesn't extend to Vernon.
    Leaky reactor fence viewing

Leaky reactor fences are a relatively new area of expertise for fence
viewers, but most of the traditional skills could probably still be put to
    use.

I'm very thankful someone brought this up. Look closely, VY supporter. This is undeniable truth.

<sigh> And again I will remind the anti nuke community for the umteenth time.

The data collected last year. showed that the radiation levels INSIDE Vernon Elementary School. were higher than those at the fence line of VY. This is due to natural occuring radon gas. Which does not come from VY.

As much as you'd like to believe it does.

If you're all about improving infrastructure like your man Barack. Look at the railroad and the potential disaster waiting to happen.

With all that strawman laying aound?

As usual you don't want to the facts. Maybe you should go back to Brooklyn if you're afraid of being exposed to radiation from VY.

More people (thousands) die each year from sun radiation in the form of skin cancer then from any power plant. (has anyone in the public died of nuclear power plant radiation in the USA?) I think if any Vernon Elementary parent thought this was a problem they would move away, or short of this, could it be considered child abuse? How many parents let their kids get sunburned?

And more people (MANY thousands) die from lung cancer then die from motor vehicle accidents in the USA each year. So why in the world do you bother wearing a seatbelt, or have a child in the car with you do the same?

    http://www.arthurhu.com/INDEX/health/death.htm

Because, such comparisons are flat out idiotic. The REASON our fore brain has evolved like it has, is to calculate, and minimize risk as much as possible. Even when there is just a small *chance* of a risk factor residing in a choice, the smart money is on "plan on the worst, but hope for the best".

Lots. Mine did. I'm sure I'm not alone in that category.

    Bad information as usual

So what Ed and company are trying to pass off as the truth is that the ~1 millirem* that a student may be exposed to at Vernon school from VY is worse than the ~360 millirem the student receives during the rest of the year.

Same bad science as the right-wing nutjob climate change deniers.

*Dose base on nurse's station value of 7.5 millirem (Table 6b) adjusted for 175 school days 7 hrs in length. It should be noted that station inside the school noted a higher exposure than the outside locations so it seems that some of the dose at the nurse's station is not from VY.

I have a child who goes to Vernon Elementary, and at one point had 3 at same time. I have a lot of training in hazardous materials, and I can without any doubt tell you that the greater risk to our children is the train that goes by and comes off the rail. I would much rather live in the shadow of a nuclear facility (and I do) than any other form of industrial complex.

I see that there is talk of minimizing risk in life, than you would understand why seatbelts, helmets, sun screen, and banning cigerettes would definatly be much more important. Going after safe, and reliable nuclear plants, is akin to saying that all people should wear rubber suits to prevent bumping into things.(you never know you could get hurt)

People who get just one piece of information, and then treat all conclusions that they come to as hard and fast facts really need to perform a reality check. I firmly believe in questioning information from our government, and from big companies, but remember everything is not a conspiracy, and rarely is anyone truly out to get you!

And who really cares if a company moves a fence on property they already own for their own benefit.

I see you are new around here (Welcome aboard! Are you a long time lurker maybe?) so he's how a normal VY story goes (painted with a broad brush and tongue firmly in cheek!)

    1. Person posts a story filled with half-truths and innuendo and is never to be heard from in thread again.

    2. A few antis chime in with a few sarcastic inside-jokes to appeal to the their friends in the "in" clique.

    3. Pro-nuclear people post a few facts rebutting antis nonsensical position.

    4. Antis repeat step 2 without ever addressing the facts presented in Step 3.

    5. Excessively snide comments from both sides are removed by mods.

    6. Thread dies out only to be repeated in another month when the next VY "crisis" occurs.

Ed Anthes is just the latest in a long line of anti-nuke posters. Some, like Gary Sachs, have moved on to other forums where there feelings won't get hurt by people posting facts which interfere with their world view.

I've brought up the chlorine rail tankers before but all you get in return is "La la la la. I can't hear you. VY is evil..."
I'm not sure if this is step 2 or step 5... let's make it both!

***3. Pro-nuclear people post a few facts rebutting antis nonsensical position.***

I think that should be "3. Pro-nuclear person posts few facts. They fail to address the point that the poster missed in the first place, and instead focus on some triviality."

***Entergy Nuclear wants to move the fence farther away from their leaking reactor because they can't comply with radiation limits.***

Seriously? That's what the "smart guys" at VY came up with? Hooo boy!

"Entergy Nuclear wants to move the fence farther away from their leaking reactor because they can't comply with radiation limits."

No they don't! (That's the equivalent rebuttal of Ed's "facts")

What I did do was expose was Ed's misinformation about dose. Whether is was just ignorance on his part or intent to deceive, only Ed knows for sure.

I'm sure you're just trolling to get me to respond and if so, glad I could help out.

Oh sure, sure, that's right, they're moving the fence to "clarify the calculations of public radiation dose by merging the two terms "boundary line" and "fence line" into one for dose assessments."

They're moving the fence about 1500 feet to clarify calculations by merging terms? Presumably, the current location of the fence makes the terms and the calculations unclear.

    The question is moot
    Authored by: PutneyReject on Saturday, July 18 2009 @ 06:51 PM GMT+4
I don't know why Entergy is moving the fence, you don't know why Entergy is moving the fence, Ed doesn't know why Entergy is moving the fence.

Is it reasonable that they want to expand the "fenceline" such that the state definition aligns with the NRC definition of "site boundary" and in the process gain some margin? Sure.

Is it reasonable that there is some sort of vast conspiracy involving the VT Dept . of Health, Entergy and others to not issue the report until they can fudge the numbers? No.

See Ed's other post about the state not putting up meeting minutes within !FOUR! days and him blaming Douglas budget cuts. Sounds identical to the conspiracy wackos at FreeRepublic.com
    The questioner is mute

***I don't know why Entergy is moving the fence, you don't know why Entergy is moving the fence, Ed doesn't know why Entergy is moving the fence.***

Yeah, it's a mystery that defies VY's own explanation!

***Is it reasonable that they want to expand the "fenceline" such that the state definition aligns with the NRC definition of "site boundary" and in the process gain some margin? Sure.***

Yeah, sure, completely reasonable to get that straightened out after 37 years of operation. Totally. I wonder why they waited so long...

***Is it reasonable that there is some sort of vast conspiracy involving the VT Dept . of Health, Entergy and others to not issue the report until they can fudge the numbers? No***

Of course not. The numbers are just waiting for the calculations to be "clarified" by moving the fence.
