Interesting that it was chalk and not something permanently defacing, like spray paint.

my question is what were they writing or drawing and if it was just sidewalk chalk yeah I can see making them wash it I guess but it just seems silly. Does anyone know if it was swear words or something vulgar?

i was told by someone who was actually drawing with the chalk (dunno if they got a ticket or a no trespass warning) that someone was taking pictures of the drawings, and of them cleaning it up... i was kind of hoping that it would be posted online somewhere so everyone could see what they got in trouble for... from what i heard, it seemed harmless enough... people write with chalk on the sidewalk all the time... seems to me that the police were just doing their jobs, but what happened to warnings for things like that? it was only CHALK, and it rained later that night...

My guess is that if it was just road surface and/or sidewalks and the
scrawl wasn't obscene (if you ran a small shop, wouldn't you just love to
have some "youths" draw pictures of genitalia in the area near the
entrance to your place? Really original, and just another example of
what gives Brattleboro such a wonderful, creative "vibe"), the cops would
have looked the other way. When you start talking about drawing on
elevators and nearby buildings, you're into vandalism territory.

The kids came into the store where I work and asked if they could use their chalk on the sidewalk outside. I said, Sure, no problem, and then they told me of their saga at the parking garage.

So I called the police and told them the kids had the permission of the store to draw on the sidewalk.

Honestly, being arrested for chalk drawing? Is this the kind of "crime" we care about?

you might have missed the part of the article that states that they were drawing on the elevator, parking garage , and private property owners buildings. Also interesting to note that one of the artists had a previous criminal trespass....
Their actions seem to be defended by some. This is a quality of life issue, and public nuisance issue and a property rights issue?

Unfortunately, a lot of posters on this site turn into bigots when a
situation arises that involves the police. Reasoning faculties recede as
the bias pours forth, sweeping away nuance and fact. The police are the
bad guys/gals. The people confronted by the police are the good
guys/gals. It's just mindless. I would think that people wouldn't want to
have their powers of perception addled by ideology and personal
agendas, but that doesn't seem to be the case. And that simply adds to
    the darkness and misunderstanding.

Sidewalks are the towns property, so why give permission to deface
something that is not yours? That's a fundalmental flaw of your
    reasoning.

I have never felt the police are the bad guys in fact they have helped me out on several situations in this town. just because i disagree with some things that are going on does not mean I hate the police. I cannot speak for others here but I have doubts anyone feels that way.
