C.X. Silver Gallery presents Bhutanese Weaver Rinzin Wangmo tonight Friday evening 7-10pm and tomorrow Saturday 9am-5pm in West Brattleboro this week only.
More information is at www.cxsilvergallery.com/html/Bhutanese-Weaving-Rinzin-Wangmo.htm
Rinzin will be describing the backstrap loom process and the designs created by her family's atelier in Bumthang, central Bhutan. A video of the loom demonstration from Rinzin's previous visit to Brattleboro in 2007 will be showing.
The atelier is known for intricate and exquisite designs, as an authority in the natural vegetal dyes used in the weaving, and for the weaving school that trains women in weaving arts thereby giving them a means to support their families. This Bhutanese industry of longstanding vibrant traditions is a great instance of art as an economic engine.
Bhutan with its constitutional Buddhist monarchy and emerging democratic governmental processes is located south of China, north of India and east of Nepal. Bhutan is a land of both some of the highest of the Himalayas and of lush tropical forests, where the materials are gathered to make the vegetal dyes.
Coming from the Santa Fe Folk Art Festival (second half of July)(http://www.folkartmarket.org/index.php/profiles/entry/rinzin_wangmo/) before making her way to Vermont, Rinzin was center stage at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival last year in Washington, DC. The public is welcome to come meet and talk with Rinzin at the C.X. Silver Gallery in West Brattleboro, Vermont during the following hours:
Friday July 31 from 7 to 10pm,
Saturday August 1 from 9am to 5pm.
Please note the updated timings due to changes in travel arrangements for the presenter.
This free event about textile arts of Bhutan is appropriate to children and adults, anyone with an interest in learning about and viewing textile art, an active weaving tradition.
