MusicYELLOW BARN HONORS JOHN BURT IN COLLABORATION WITH SANDGLASS THEATER

Yellow Barn Music Festival is hosting a concert on Friday, August 7 at 8 p.m. to honor theater director John Burt, of Putney and New York City. The program includes works by Fauré, Chinary Ung, Mendelssohn and Sophia Gubaidulina. The performance of Gubaidulina’s “Dancer on a Tightrope” will be brought to life by puppet masters from Putney’s internationally known Sandglass Theater. A supper (by reservation) at 6 p.m. at the Putney Inn will precede the concert.

Performing in Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in F minor, Op. 80 will be longtime former Cleveland Quartet cellist, Paul Katz. Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson, Op. 61 will be sung by renowned baritone William Sharp, with Peabody Trio violinist Violaine Melançon and others. Percussionist Ian Antonio and Peabody Trio cellist Natasha Brofsky will perform Cambodian-American composer Chinary Ung’s “Grand Alap”, originally commissioned for the Meet the Composer/Readers’ Digest program in 1996.

This latter work ties in with John Burt’s involvement with Cambodian Living Arts, a project of World Education which he co-founded in 1999. CLA is an organization which works to support the revival of traditional Kmer performing arts and inspire contemporary artistic expression. Burt currently serves as chair emeritus of the organization. He has been producing and directing theater-based projects for community development for 30 years, and is a practicing expressive arts therapist. Yellow Barn honors him for his lifetime of service to the arts in the U.S. and abroad, and his ongoing interest and involvement in local arts organizations including Sandglass and Yellow Barn
    .
For tickets and information, visit www.yellowbarn.org or call 802-387-6637. Yellow Barn’s 40th anniversary season will conclude on Saturday, August 8.
