    Fire on High Street
    Friday, September 11 2009 @ 10:39 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: Joann

Town NewsHas anyone heard anything about the fire at Ker, Westerlund & Fleming Funeral Home on High Street? My scanner no longer works, but a friend who lives in the Manley Block a short ways down High Street, has called me a couple times about it.

    Fire on High Street

There was a fire at the funeral home on High Street which apparently
started around 6pm or so. I was down at Brattleboro Books with my
mother at the time and there was a LOT of smoke on Elliott Street
wafting through Harmony Lot. I think they sent every fire engine in the
area because when we walked up later, they were arrayed all over the
place and High Street was closed above and below the area of the
funeral home. I asked the young police officer what had happened and
he said the fire had been located in the apartment upstairs but had no
idea the extent of the damage. I guess we'll all find out in the Reformer
    tomorrow....

As it's been reported now, the fire started in the storage space above the crematorium's vented smokestack. The apartment above the funeral home, downwind of the crematorium, was engulfed and smoke & water damaged to the extent that the newlyweds living there lost everything.

I've heard nothing of efforts to help them start again. If anyone knows of anything doing to that intent, please post it.

That's a good idea (to help them out). I haven't heard anything yet,
    either.
