For Last Minute Men: Some Holiday Gift Suggestions
    Wednesday, December 23 2009 @ 08:55 AM GMT+5
    Contributed by: paulgardner

OtherBrattleboro has a very high proportion of "sensitive" men - guys who are comfortable with and accepting of their feminine side. So there may not be many troglodytes like me out on Main St. at the last minute desperately searching for inspiration and a perfect gift.

If you do find yourself in this predicament for the first time or are just caught off guard let me offer a default list of gift suggestions to consider:

    SAFE, BUT BORING

    - Wool socks. Smart wool is actually highly prized around here and not as boring.
    - Soap. We mostly give this to family members far away.
    - Skin lotions. Lotsa dry skin this time of year.

    RELATIVELY SAFE, NOT BORING

    - Cash. (need I say more?)
    - Chocolate, fair trade. Know your recipient - not everybody is a chocoholic (gasp!). The Food COOP has a good selection, but they do get bought out as Dec. 25 approaches.
    - Clothing store gift certificate. Only if you know where your recipient likes to shop. In my family Sam's is a safe bet.
    - Record store g.c. Not everybody listens to music (gasp #2!), but it is really hard to pick music for somebody else. If you know they've been pining for a certain Elvis picture disc in pink vinyl, then go for it! Otherwise, without inside insight, the g.c. is a very nice gift (personal experience on both ends).
    - Brown & Roberts g.c. If your recipient is at all handy or cooks, B & R has something they want. The place is a treasure trove and a g.c. is a great excuse to go in there with nothing particular in mind.
    - ditto for Twice Upon a Time.

    A BIT RISKY

    - Silk scarves. I can't recall where in Brattleboro I've found these, but they're well received if you get the colors right. That's the risky part. You have to know a little bit about what colors the recipient will wear and what goes well with them. Broad example: a metallic silvery scarf for someone who wears earth tones is probably not going to fly.
    - Flannel nighties. Available at Sam's the last time I looked. Always welcomed this time of year.
    - Book store g.c. For political lefties an Everyone's Books g.c. is a great gift. So is Brattleboro Books across the way - I love going in there (hint-hint!).

If I think of more later in the day I'll add them in the comments below. happy shopping!

Great ideas, Paul. I've known a lot of last minute men in my life. ;)

    Very solid suggestions.

A pair of good wool socks is an excellent idea for men and women
    around here.

For the soap, I've introduced people to Brattleboro-made soaps as
    well as Dr. Bronners.

Tom and Sally's chocolates have been popular with both sexes... : )

As for additions to the list:

    - a good pen and a nice notebook or pad can be useful to most
    people.
    - good cooks might like ingredients - like a really nice bottle of olive
oil, some maple sugar, or something else that is typically expensive
    and useful.
    - a really soft pillow, or plush towel
    - a massage device or gift certificate
    - a toy. Adults rarely ask for toys, but they still seem to appreciate
them. How about a game, puppet, model... heck, a yo-yo.

... and if they have everything - a donation to a good cause in their
    name.

    Great list!

I know many very wonderful people who do not manage time very well. Time management is the actual skill involved in early gift-buying - not sensitivity. :)

Lots of great chocolate at Tom & Sally's in addition to the co-op, btw!

Fancy consumable items tend to be very safe, as long as you know people's tastes. We have sent people a lot of wonderful local cheese. Fancy tea or coffee can also be a lovely gift. Stop at Windham Wines for help finding the perfect bottle of gift wine or beer in your price range.

If you are low on cash but want something really special and beautiful, stop in at the bead store and make a necklace or a pair of earrings; the staff is very helpful for beginners. If you are not that low on cash and want something really special and beautiful, Vermont Artisan Designs has so many really nice handmade things (some of them quite inexpensive) suitable for all ages and genders.

Don't forget Verde for the garden lover in your life, and the Blue Moose for anyone who appreciates well designed home accessories. Blue Moose is really good about stocking locally made artisan work as well as quality merchandise that is made in Europe and other sweatshop-free areas of the world.

The flower shop has some really nice houseplants to brighten the season. The co-op has some as well, like cyclamen, which is popular this time of year and is lower-maintenance than something like an orchid.

Here's a book that guys actually enjoy reading: Fearless Puppy on
American Road. Ask at Book Cellar, at Everyone's Books, or email the
author ten@fearlesspuppy.com. I've heard a few fellows say that they
haven't read an entire book for years, but they couldn't put this one
    down!

    Gift Certificates:
    Beadniks
    Chelsea Royal Diner
    Massage
    Hair Salons
    Yoga cards

It was refreshing to hear the young guys in Beadniks today talking sincerely and caringly with each other about what their girlfriends might like for beads & jewels.

    Gas Cards
    Phone cards
    Bookstore cards
    Food Co-op cards

and to all a good night.
