I participated in an event that was streamed live on UStreamTV and it is still available to view on their website on demand. I would guess this will be as well. Try going to their site and using their search tool.

Could I offer this as a comment on John Allen's support of the proposal to build a new "safer" reactor on the grounds of Yankee.

    From http://www.radiation.org/spotlight/080306_keene.html
    and predating our current problems.

"The question of whether these chemicals have harmed people has been consistently ignored or denied by both Entergy and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. But it is critical to examine the Vermont Yankee health “report card” before it is allowed to operate for 20 more years.

Only one federal study of cancer near U.S. nuclear plants has been done, at Senator Edward Kennedy’s insistence. The 1990 study showed that cancer deaths in the three counties closest to Vermont Yankee (Windham VT, Cheshire NH, and Franklin MA) rose after the reactor started for seven types of cancer, and declined only for two types.

The severity of the cancer issue in New Hampshire may be surprising. A traditionally non-industrial state, with low levels of poverty and unemployment and access to top medical care in nearby Boston should have low rates of cancer. But in the 1980s and 1990s, the state death rate was 9th highest for cancer, but only 33rd highest for all other causes. Mortality for many types of cancer rank high, including common ones:
    State of New Hampshire
    Type of Cancer

    Rank
    Bladder 5th highest
    Breast 6th highest
    Colon 14th highest
    Esophagus 2nd highest
    Ovary 5th highest
    Pancreas 4th highest
    Prostate 9th highest
    Rectum 1st highest"

I couldn't find figures directly related to Windham but from the text I would assume our rates are similar.

I find myself having some major issues with John Allen except for his statement that we can't afford the new police building. Otherwise his takes on Yankee and Pay As You Throw were concerning. Thinking that the idea of building a new plant at Yankee wasn't just concerning but extremely alarming.

I thought the other four were well-spoken and impressive for varying reasons so will have to give more thought to where my vote will go.

The good new is that, although one or two Brattleboro Selectboard members may believe otherwise, their influence on what is or isn't built in Vernon is fairly limited.

The odds that there will ever be another nuclear power plant in southern Vermont are about even with the odds that a dinosaur will hatch in Vernon.

VY started construction before Act 250, not to mention a whole slew of federal environmental regulations. And even if anyone was insane enough to embark on such a doomed voyage, opponents could keep the permit process tied up for the next century.

And, of course, no construction could take place until after the decommissioning, remediation and reclamation of the VY site and, based on Entergy's plan for the decommissioning fund, that probably won't even begin for another 25 years or more.

So Allen and Rep. Patty O'Donnell, who thinks the Legislature can, and will, "propose" a second power plant at the site, are just confirming to the rest of us that they have completely severed any connection they ever had to reality.

You need to pay attention, mike. Georgia, with one minor exception, is not in the state of Vermont.

Try the Vermont Department of Health Cancer Registry instead.

Mangano is thoroughly discredited, kinda like those scientists that Inhofe trots out to discredit AGW.

    Don't assume....

These aren't Mangano's figures, these are figures used in a letter he wrote to the Keene Sentinel. Kennedy's study showed a rise in the majority of cancers correlating to the building of Yankee, particularly childhood leukemias and cancers. The thyroid cancer rate I find particularly interesting having grown up in the vicinity of a now closed plant and one telling health issue with the older reactors is thyroid cancer and thyroid conditions.

I'll look at the study you suggest but if it covers all of Vermont it's useless. I'm particularly interested in this area near the plant. It seems ever since I've moved here that just based on personal experience there's a high rate of cancers considering the area.

I've lived in similar rural farming areas and in areas where you might expect more cancers due to environment and I've never been in a situation where i"ve known so many people personally or ithrough friends that have had some sort of cancer. Just a personal experience but correlates with Kennedy's study.

Thanks Maus for the assurances because I must admit my blood pressure went up a bit when Allen said that.

I only got to watch a few minutes, but I was quite impressed with how irritated John Allen seemed about the fact that he needed to be there. His contempt was palpable. And I also wondered why Corum didn't even bother. Daryl and Dora both seemed grounded and knowledgeable and pragmatic.

I kind of liked it when Allen started complaining about how few people show up to meetings, the comment was put a little more crudely as I remember. Well I might offer that if people thought they could do committee work and have it respected and followed through on there might be a bit more participating. Well, welcome to the world of volunteering John, you must be new to it. There are always 4 or 5 familiar faces even in really big cities and then you have to show a welcome face for others to come in. Referring to their participating as getting up off their ........ doesn't really set the tone you need.

I didn't see that part. And I regret saying the contempt was palpable with absolutely nothing but my own sense of things to back it up. I still have the impression, but without a rational way to describe it, it's not fair to criticize him for it. I must have been possessed by the spirit of some empty-headed motormouth pundit - maybe Cokie Roberts or Juan Williams - when I got up this morning.

Yes, and I'm going to this from memory only which is not exactly always accurate but this is how I remember it being phrased. And I must say in Allen's defense in this particular case (can't forgive him that new nuke comment) I've found myself likewise frustrated during my "volunteer" years when everyone has a complaint but no one shows up to pitch in, it is very frustrating but it seems to be pretty common. So in my humble opinion, the only way to overcome that issue is to be very welcoming and take suggestions into serious consideration when asked for: the water issue in West Brat, the DRB's suggestion re Alicis, the reservoir are the the most recent that come to mind.

Over the weekend, I was told by WTSA that Jesse Corum went to Mardi
    Gras instead.

I thought all the challengers did very well. They each made their case
    and didn't make any candidacy-ending mistakes. : )

One thing that struck me was that things aren't dividing up along party
lines so much as class lines. The challenges are bubbling up from below -
not business owners or trust funders. I'm not quite sure what that tells
    us.
