Deer Ridge Farm will host a community potluck at 5:45 p.m. Saturday, March 6. For interested guests, the potluck will also feature a cooking party beginning promptly at 5.
The dinner is the first in a series of farm-hosted potluck dinners organized by Windham Localvores to celebrate local foods throughout the year. The farm is located at 4057 Hinesburg Rd.
Potluck guests should bring a dish that includes one or more locally grown ingredients. “Your contribution can be something as simple as a bag of local apples, local cider or a local cheese,” said Holderness. Other seasonally available foods may include roasted root vegetables, quiche, bread made with local wheat, or dishes prepared with produce that was home-canned or frozen during the harvest season.
Guests are encouraged to bring their own plates, bowls, cups and flatware. After dinner, guests may have a chance to visit the sugarhouse, try their hand at transplanting, or shell Deer Ridge dry beans for the next potluck.
Hosts Lisa Holderness and Jerry Smith are comfortable with a bustling kitchen, as they already open their doors to share a love of farming and food with school groups and Farm Campers. Holderness is also a science and health teacher, and the founder of Farm Camp. Smith, a farmer since he was a teen, has been “the flower guy” at Brattleboro Farmers’ Market for more than 25 years. Their farm mission is to cultivate a more joyful and sustainable community through their farm and education work.
