    Epic Brattleboro Potholes 2010?
    Thursday, March 18 2010 @ 03:50 PM GMT+4
    Contributed by: cgrotke

Questions & AnswersThis winter we had a number of weather events that involved lots of rain or melting, then refreezing. These are ideal conditions to create potholes and frost heaves. The water gets down into cracks in the paving, and the freezing and defrosting causes expansions and contractions until the paving falls apart. After that, debris gets in, sloshes around, and makes things worse.

What potholes and frost heaves have been giving you the biggest headaches this year?

For me, the holes at the corner of Rt. 30/Linden and Chapin have been requiring clever avoidance techniques for the past few months. They got a temporary fill but I'm still careful, and I put them high on this year's list.

Heave-wise, Forest Street has some whoppers. Undersides of cars beware!

    What have you noticed?

The plows were responsible for some potholes on South Main St. Two are deep enough that they are marked by orange and white traffic barrels. I've also hit one on Western Ave. that made the car shudder.

It seems better than last year though or is it just my imagination?

A couple years ago I wrote a story called "Pothole Slalom". I was conjuring the image of a skier avoiding obstacles.
Now I think of Brattleboro drivers as a polar bears jumping/swimming from iceberg to iceberg. Instead of looking for obstacles to avoid I find myself looking for anything that resembles whole pavement to drive on. To get from one patch to another you have to dive across seas of potholes & crumbled pavement.
It isn't just Brattleboro either. I drove up rt. 30 Tuesday and was noticing how bad the pavement is up around Newfane.

Last winter we hit a huge pothole just over the bridge on 119 that destroyed not only the tire, but the whole wheel apparatus - to the tune of nearly $600.00. Luckily, I haven't seen any craters that size this year : /
