This winter we had a number of weather events that involved lots of rain or melting, then refreezing. These are ideal conditions to create potholes and frost heaves. The water gets down into cracks in the paving, and the freezing and defrosting causes expansions and contractions until the paving falls apart. After that, debris gets in, sloshes around, and makes things worse.
What potholes and frost heaves have been giving you the biggest headaches this year?
For me, the holes at the corner of Rt. 30/Linden and Chapin have been requiring clever avoidance techniques for the past few months. They got a temporary fill but I'm still careful, and I put them high on this year's list.
Heave-wise, Forest Street has some whoppers. Undersides of cars beware!
What have you noticed?
