Are soap box cars legal anymore? I would imagine they'd need a
permit to race them or else a long, paved private drive.
I remember my brother made soap box car out of our old baby
carriage (my mother was a bit perturbed about that part) and then we
raced it down the alley. But we only had the one racer so there was
no one to beat. Didn't seem to matter. We had a great time taking
turns riding it down the alley, then walking back up to the corner, and
doing it again.
We were on a construction kick at the time. Me and my pals also
built a clubhouse out of shipping crates that year. It doubled as the
observation tower for watching the races.

In upstate NY, they'd get a permit to close one big street and everyone
would line it to watch, like a parade. Except it was on a hill and everyone
went by quickly. No bands either.

Ok, now this one is really great.
A polar bear eating a seal, as part of soap box derby.
This is the type of spirit I would like to see here, if the soapbox derby comes to town.
Based on the best floats of the Rift Raft Regatta of the past, I would say we have the right spirit in town for this kind of thing. In fact, this creative goofball attitude is one of the things that drew me to Brattleboro.

Is anyone else out there interested in creating a soap box derby car for this event?
I hope to find the time to make one. Probably nothing as good as the polar bear eating a seal car seen the pictures above, but, I have been thinking of converting my tobaaggin into a soap box derby car, maybe complete with fake snow....
